The history of Curling is still debated among historians, with the some archaeologists claiming to have uncovered stones used in some form of ice game dating to the early inhabitants of northern Europe. The so-called Stirling Stone, inscribed with a date of 1511, is the first certain proof that some variation of the game has been played in Scotland since the early 16th century. By the early 1800s, the game had taken on rules and a level of organization that saw its popularity spread across the Atlantic into Canada and southward into the United States throughout the 19th century.
