The Borekei بۆرەکەیی; also spelled Borakay, Borekey, are a Kurdish tribe inhabiting the Hawatu and Sarpol-e-Zahab regions of Iranian Kurdistan, Baghdad, London (Edgware Road), Sulaymaniyah, Qaradagh, Kuwait[1] (although most of them have moved from Kuwait to the UK), and Belarus. They have historically been present in India, Palestine,[2] and Russia. One of the most notable Borekei was Safi-ad-din Ardabili.[3]

Today, they mostly reside in Takab, Divandarreh, Hawatu, Baghdad and Edgware Road.

The name Borekei may have originated from the tribe leaders who was referred to as Borek,[4] However Faruq Safizadeh in his book claims otherwise: "he states that the name Borakay comes from an Aryan tribe called Perdegei.[5]

History in Kuwait and Iraq[edit]

Around the begin of the 19th Century, vast numbers of Borekeys left their homes in Qaradagh, Sulaymaniyah and a handful of Kurds from Sarpol-e-Zahab left their homes to move towards Baghdad for work purposes. Another amount went to Kuwait after 1946's discovery of oil in Kuwait, Until 1991 when as a consequence of the Gulf War many migrated to the West.
