Brede Skistad (born 4 March 1948, died 25 August 1995 in Kristiansand) was a Norwegian footballer and manager.[1]
He played 124 games (4 goals) for Mjøndalen IF Fotball in the former first division between 1969 and 1977. [2] He was also Norwegian champion in bandy for the club.
At the end of the 1980s, he was manager of Stord IL. He got Stord promoted to the second division in Norway, and nearly got them promoted again in 1989. From 1990 to 1994, he was manager of IK Start. He took Start to two third-place finishes in the league in 1991 and 1992. In 1992, Start were close to winning the title, but fell short in their final manages, and eventually finished behind Viking FK and Rosenborg BK.
In 1993, Start collapsed after the sale of Frank Strandli to Leeds and Start were close to being relegated. In 1994, Start wanted to win the title again, and bought back Tore André Dahlum from Rosenborg BK, Petter Belsvik from Hamarkameratene, and Tommy Svindal Larsen from Odds BK. However, they finished fourth after a miserable start with a number of draws. After a break for the World Cup, Start's season ended strongly.
Brede Skistad quit as Start manager after the 1994 season due to leukaemia, and handed over to his assistant, Erik Ruthford Pedersen. Brede Skistad made a short comeback (2 league games and 1 cup game) in the 1995 season, but he left again after a short time. The disease flared up again and he died on 25 August 1995 at the age of 47.
As manager of Start, he developed many young players, including Tore André Dahlum, Frank Strandli and Erik Mykland. They made their mark on Norwegian football in the 1990s. Skistad was well-liked by players, and both Mykland[3] and Morten Pettersen[4] said that Brede Skistad was the best coach they ever had.
Skistad was mentioned regarding the Norwegian national team manager job after Ingvar Stadheim left in 1990, but Egil Olsen was eventually named as national manager. Skistad went on to work as a commentator and summariser for football games for NRK and TV 2.
Brede Skistad was the twin brother of Boye Skistad who played alongside Brede and Mjøndalen, and later managed the same club.
