On May 6, 2002, 40-year-old Gary Thomas Brown, of California, robbed Bank of America branch in I-65 at the Brentwood Old Hickory in 133 Franklin Road in the downtown of Brentwood, Tennessee, and ambushed two police officers and seriously wounded them before he was killed by return fire.[2]

Just after 1 p.m., Gary Thomas Brown is presumed to have gotten off I-65 at the Brentwood Old Hickory exit and turned left onto Franklin Road looking for a bank to rob. He did not have to go far. A Bank of America branch was just a city block or so down the road.
The first Brentwood Police Department officer to arrive on the scene was 26-year-old Officer Stephanie Joe Bellis (now Warner), three-year-veteran with Brentwood Police Department, as she arrived on the scene, Brown opened fire on her, but the bullet goes through her vehicle window, and the door, and her metal paperwork (which slowed down its speed) before she was hit in the right forearm and arm. however, she was able to get out of her car and return fire on Brown (who was returning fire).
37-year-old Sgt. Tommy Patrick Walsh, 17-year-veteran with Brentwood Police Department, arrived on the scene, he stopped in front of the bank and fired at Brown who returned fire immediately: a bullet hit Walsh just above his left knee. Brown goes on the street, took gunfire with Lt. Tommy Campsey, Detective Richard Hickey, Lt. Steve Walling, Cpl. Jimmy Campbell. Campsey, Hickey, Walling and Campbell fired 28 shots from their service pistols at Brown, fatally wounding him in his chest and head.
Aftermath[edit]
Both of Sgt. Tommy Walsh and Officer Stephanie Bellis were released one month after the bank robbery. Officer Bellis was awarded with Distinguished Service Award, Purple Heart and Department Commendation Medal. Sgt. Walsh was also awarded with Distinguished Service Award, Purple Heart and Department Commendation Medal and promoted to assistant chief. Lt. Campsey was awarded with Distinguished Service Award, Meritorious Service Award, Lifesaving Award and Department Commendation Medal and promoted to the rank of captain. Detective Hickey was awarded with Meritorious Service Award, Lifesaving Award and Department Commendation Medal and promoted to the rank of captain. Lt. Walling was also awarded with Meritorious Service Award, Lifesaving Award and Department Commendation Medal and promoted to the rank of captain. Cpl. Campbell was awarded with Meritorious Service Award and Lifesaving Award and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.[3]
Seven months after the bank robbery, Officer Bellis married to Franklin police Department Detective Lt. Charlie Warner (who is now promoted to the rank of sergeant), in 2004, Bellis retired from the force to take care of her children, on the 10th anniversary of the bank robbery, she and Sgt. Walsh thanked the involved police officers on the scene.[4]
Real estate broker and former FBI Agent and former U.S. Navy Petty Officer who served on USS Albert W. Grant during World War II, Toy Fuson, was awarded with Citizen Commendation Award for positioning himself between the robber and called 911 for help, he died of a stroke on August 10, 2015 in Brentwood, Tennessee.[5]
