Brighten A Day is a nonprofit organization that aims to combat loneliness through intergenerational connections with seniors in retirement homes and patients in hospitals.[1]

About[edit]

After learning about the prevalent issue of loneliness and isolation amongst retirement home residents and hospital patients, middle school student Hita Gupta and her younger brother, Divit, began writing them cheerful letters to brighten their days. In order to expand their efforts, Hita founded Brighten A Day.[2]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, with many retirement home residents facing isolation due to visitor restrictions, 9-year-old Divit and 15-year-old Hita, a student at Conestoga High School, specifically focused Brighten A Day’s efforts on supporting nursing home residents through initiatives such as sending uplifting cards and letters, encouraging video messages, coordinating virtual conversations between volunteers and seniors, delivering care packages, and donating devices.[3][4][5]

Impact[edit]

Brighten A Day has engaged tens of thousands of volunteers and sent out hundreds of thousands of cards to nursing homes and hospitals in more than 40 countries.[2] The nonprofit also has chapters throughout the United States and in other countries.[6]
