British and Romanian Royal Families
The British and Romanian Royal Families are historically linked by kinship and friendship. Queen Marie of Romania (1875-1938, wife of Ferdinand I of Romania) was born into the British Royal Family as a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and lived some of her early years were spent in Kent. Queen Helen of Romania was a cousin of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (both grandchildren of King George I of Greece and Grand Duchess Olga Constantinovna of Russia), who in turn was a comtemporary and lifelong friend of both King Michael I & Queen Anne of Romania.[1] The close friendship and working relationship between the two Royal Families has continued into the present generation in the frequent visits between The Prince of Wales and Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown.[2]
Significant moments before 1952[edit]
The two Families were often together for significant formal and State occasions occasions, for example:
- Coronations. Edward VII's Coronation in 1902 was attended by his niece, Crown Princess Marie, and her husband Crown Prince Ferdinand,[3] who also both returned for Coronation of George V in 1911.[4] In October 1922 The Duke of York attended the Coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie in Alba Iulia. His own Coronation in London in 1937 was attended by Crown Prince Michael of Romania.[5]
- State Visits and Significant Other Visits. The respective Royal Families met on many official visits. Among the most significant were:
- The Prince of Wales' 1888 visit to Bucharest and Peleş Castle[6] - the first British Royal visit to Romania.
- King Carol I's 1892 State Visit to Queen Victoria, with his brother the Prince of Hohenzollern, at the time of Ferdinand of Romania's engagement to Marie of Edinburgh, Victoria's grand-daughter.[7]
- Queen Marie, with her daughters Princesses Marie & Ileana, made a two week visit to the King and Queen at Buckingham Palace during her visit to Western Europe for the 1919 Paris Peace Conference.[8][9]
- King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie of Romania's State Visit to King George V and Queen Mary in 1924.[10]
- King Carol II and Crown Prince Michael's 1938 State Visit to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth[11] in the period of rising tensions before WWII.
- Royal Funerals. The Romanian Royal Family was represented at the State Funerals of Queen Victoria in 1901 (by Crown Prince Ferdinand),[12] Edward VII in 1910 (again by Crown Prince Ferdinand)[13] and George V in 1936[14] (by King Carol II, who had also previously attended the funeral of Queen Alexandra in 1925[15]). Queen Marie of Romania & Princess Elisabeth attended a memorial to George V in Bucharest.[16] When Marie died two years later The Duke and Duchess of Kent travelled to Romania to attend her funeral.[17][18]
Less formally, the Families frequently socialised together in Britain and continental Europe.[19] Queen Marie and her children were frequent visitors in London, especially Prince Nicholas of Romania who was a regular visitor to the British Royal Family during his time at Eton College.[20][21] The Duke of York attended the Wedding of Princess Marie to Alexander I of the Serbs, Croats & Slovenes in Belgrade in 1922[22] and Prince Nicholas was at the Wedding of Princess Mary & Viscount Lascelles earlier that same year.[23]
The warm relationship between Helen of Romania and the British Royal Family was evident during the period of her exile from Romania during the 1930s. She visited Britain annually and when her Greek relations Princess Marina and later Prince Philip married into the British Royal Family it only strengthened those ties further. A young Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark (later Duke of Edinburgh) holidayed with Queen Helen and King Michael I in Romania in the 1920s[24] and Helen was a guest at Marina's marriage to the Duke of Kent in 1934.
A number of British Royals visited Queen Helen at her Florence home, Villa Sparta. Prince Philip stayed there in the 1930s[25] as did The Duke and Duchess of Kent in 1937.[26] Princess Margaret visited in 1949,[27] followed by her sister & brother-in-law (Princess Elizabeth & the Duke of Edinburgh) who stayed with Queen Helen, King Michael and Queen Anne in 1951.[28][29]
King Michael I and Queen Helen were high profile guests at the Wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947, leaving behind a politically tumultuous Romania to attend. They had dinner at Buckingham Palace with King George VI & Queen Elizabeth on arrival in London[30] and later in the visit Michael accompanied the King & Queen to the Royal Film Performance at The Odeon, Leicester Square.[31][32] On the day of the Wedding, Michael rode in the carriage immediately behind the King & Queen in the procession through London.[33] It was during this visit to London that Michael met his future wife Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma who was in London as her parents and brother were invited to the Wedding. Despite offers of asylum,[34] Michael and Helen returned to Romania. Less than a month later, Michael was forced to abdicate and the Socialist Republic of Romania was declared. The Romanian monarchy was ended but the strong relationship between the families remained intact.
King Michael and Queen Helen were formally received at Buckingham Palace in March 1948[35] by The King & Queen and other members of the Royal Family. This initial act of hospitality following Michael's forced abdication set the tone for the coming decades. When King Michael and Queen Anne's eldest child, Princess Margareta, was born in 1949, The Duke of Edinburgh was godfather.[36]
