Brookhaven Retreat is a multimodal mental health facility for women. The retreat offers a variety of mental health and substance abuse treatment programs.

History[edit]

Brookhaven Retreat was founded in by Jacqueline Dawes in 2006. Dawes, originally from England, moved to the United States after losing her teenage daughter to an ecstasy overdose and started Brookhaven Retreat.[1][non-primary source needed][not in citation given] She was honored by the Nashville Business Journal as a "Health Care Hero" for her innovations in substance abuse and mental health treatment.[2][non-primary source needed]

Brookhaven Retreat was featured in two episodes of "Intervention".[3][non-primary source needed][4][non-primary source needed]

Facility[edit]

Brookhaven Retreat is a voluntary residential treatment facility located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. A variety of therapies including Equine-assisted therapy, group therapy, and mindfulness techniques are offered at the facility. A licensed and registered dietitian is on-site, and the retreat also caters to special needs such as vegetarian and gluten-free diets.[5][non-primary source needed][6][user-generated source?][7][unreliable source?][8][user-generated source][9][non-primary source needed]

Treatment methods[edit]

The Lily Program and Poncho life-skills management are the flagship treatment methods at Brookhaven. Full detoxicifcation and medication management are also offered.

Depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, PTSD, substance abuse and eating disorders are some of the conditions that are treated at Brookhaven Retreat. The center does not accept involuntary patients or patients with a significant history of violent behavior. Cognitive behavioural therapy and dialectical behavior therapy are part of the treatment modalities.[10][non-primary source needed]

The Lily Program[edit]

The Lily Program is a 90-day treatment program that is available exclusively at Brookhaven Retreat and provides a framework for growth and recovery from mental health and addiction disorders. At Brookhaven, each client undergoes a thorough evaluation by a board-certified psychiatrist and individual psychotherapist who together develop an individual treatment plan specifically for the client. The treatment plan includes medication management if appropriate and provides a plan of individual, family and group therapy using specific modalities that are appropriate for the client’s case. If detoxification is necessary for substance dependence, it is provided by on-site nursing staff. Once clients are stabilized and beginning to recover they then participate in the Poncho Program which is the component of The Lily Program that is dedicated to designing a plan to return to normal life and sustained recovery.[11][user-generated source][12][dead link][13][dead link][14][dead link][15][dead link]

Poncho Program[edit]

Clients typically advance to participation in the Poncho Program[16][not in citation given] after approximately 30 days in The Lily Program when their acute needs have been stabilized and addressed. The Program adds four life skill development group sessions per week as well as corresponding weekly book reading and assignments to work on. The core of the program is The Poncho Program’s life-planning manual which addresses 30 critical areas of living from Finances to Values and Beliefs. Each participant works through each of the 30 areas in conjunction with counseling, therapists and coaching support. Finally, the participants in the Program also plan a weekly social gathering in order to practice structuring healthy activities.[17][non-primary source needed]

Aftercare Program[edit]

The Aftercare Program at Brookhaven Retreat offers several options for continued support of recovery once a client has left the facility.[18][non-primary source needed] These include:

  • Weekly Aftercare Group Telephone Call.
  • Aftercare Program Confidential Social Networking website.
  • Followup interviews at 1, 3, 6 months and 1 year.
  • Annual Alumnae Reunion.[19][dead link]
