Early life and education[edit]
Born to Georgia Mansbridge and Ronald Mansbridge (sister Jane Mansbridge) in New York City, Mansbridge attended public schools in Weston, CT, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1963, attended Reed College from 1964 to 1965, and received his B.A. summa cum laude from the University of Bridgeport in 1972 and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Boston University in 1979.
Career[edit]
His early work focused on informing patients about the effects and side effects of medication by retrieving drug information through a telephone-based service for the public.[2][3][4][5]
Mansbridge specialized in innovative approaches to framing OCD symptoms. In one of them, he used several optical illusions, including the Shepard Tabletop Illusion, to demonstrate to clients how brains can persistently misperceive reality. He coined the term “emotional hallucinations” for the misperceptions underlying obsessive thoughts. These and other approaches appear in his The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Conquering Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (Penguin 2009).[6]
Mansbridge was President of the Capital Area Psychological Association, Austin, TX (2006), President of the Connecticut Behavior Therapy Association [now the Connecticut Association for Behavioral Analysis] (1996-99), and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation [now the International OCD Foundation] (1999-present).
