Bruno Söhnle GmbH Uhrenatelier Glashütte/Sa. is a German Watchmaker from Glashütte in Saxony that manufactures and sells quartz watches and mechanical wrist watches with manual and automatic movements.

History[edit]

Bruno Söhnle from Wurmberg in the Black Forest (* 1940) who had already been working in the watch industry since 1957[1] founded the company Bruno Söhnle Uhrenatelier Glashütte/Sa. with four employees in April 2000. As early as 1982, one of Bruno Söhnle's companies was the West German sales partner of the former VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe.[2]

In the beginning, Bruno Söhnle only built wristwatches with quartz movements. These were Swiss quartz movements from the company Ronda AG. In 2008, with the Mechanik-Edition I, the first mechanical watch with manual winding was produced. The presentation of the first automatic collection took place in 2010. The Bruno Söhnle company was the first to start making quartz watches again after the division of the GUB in Glashütte and is regarded as the entry-level brand in the world of Glashütte wristwatches.

In 2006, Söhnle bought the former Assmannhaus (named after the watchmaker Julius Carl Friedrich Aßmann) at Dresdner Straße 14 in Glashütte, where a restaurant and a guesthouse were still in operation. In this house, watches had already been made 150 years earlier by the company J. Assmann Deutsche Anker-Uhren-Fabrik Glashütte i. Sa. After a refurbishment and the termination of the lease with the tenant, Söhnle expanded its watchmaking operations to all parts of the house in spring 2012.[3] In 2022, the workshop on the second floor of the house consists of around 20 watchmakers.

Products[edit]

The Bruno Söhnle watch atelier offers ten different collections in 2022, each of which includes men's and women's watches in a wide range of variations.

Certificate of origin[edit]

On 22 February 2022, the “Verordnung zum Schutz der geographischen Herkunftsangabe Glashütte“ came into force.[4] This means that the indication of origin "Glashütte" may only be used in commercial transactions for watches that have been manufactured in the region of origin. The area of origin includes the following areas in the Free State of Saxony: the city of Glashütte, the districts of Bärenstein and Lauenstein of the city of Altenberg for subcontracting and finishing, and Dresden for certain finishing steps.

In order to be allowed to label watches with the "Glashütte" designation of origin, a manufacturer must produce at least 50 % of the value added to the calibre locally in Glashütte. At Bruno Söhnle, the main plate, the automatic bridge, the gear train bridge, the winding bridge, the lever bridge and the balance cock are produced and finished in Glashütte (including various gold-plated finishes in yellow, white and rosé). The rotor is an in-house development by Bruno Söhnle. On some Bruno Söhnle watches, you will find Glashütte-typical features such as the decorative cut on the gear wheels, thermally blued screws, hand-polished golden chatons and the Glashütte stripe cut on the three-quarter plate. The quartz calibres are also refined in Bruno Söhnle's watch atelier and are sometimes visible through glass backs.[5]

Awards[edit]

In a nationwide survey conducted by an opinion research company in 2008, Bruno Söhnle ranked third in the Most Famous German Watch Brands category in the price range of 300 to 1000 Euros.[5]

  • 5th place in the “Uhr des Jahres 2010” competition (category watches up to 2000 euros) for the Mechanik Edition I.[6]
  • 8th place in the 2014 “Goldene Unruh” competition (category watches up to 2500 euros) for the Lagomat Day-Date.[7]
  • 1st place in the GQ Watch Award 2016 for the Stuttgart Automatik Blau in the entry-level watch category.[8]
