Bryan David Hunt is an American diplomat who is the nominee to be the next US Ambassador to Sierra Leone.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Hunt earned his bachelor's degree from American University in Washington, D.C.[1]

Career[edit]

Hunt is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, with the rank of Minister Counselor. Currently, he serves as the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the United States Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Before this role, Hunt served as the Director of the Office of South Sudan and Sudan in the Bureau of African Affairs in the United States Department of State. Hunt also served as the State Department's Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Africa and both Sudan and South Sudan. Earlier, Hunt served in the U.S. Embassies in Maputo, Mozambique, Georgetown, Guyana, and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. He has also served in various places in Pakistan, namely Lahore and Islamabad. Hunt also served as deputy director for Regional Affairs, in the Africa Bureau's Office of Regional and Security Affairs and as the Bureau's Desk Officer for Angola while also taking up Togo, Benin, and Côte d'Ivoire.[1]

Ambassador Nomination[edit]

On March 6, 2023, President Joe Biden nominated Hunt to be the next ambassador to Sierra Leone.[1] Hearings on his nomination were held before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on May 16, 2023. His nomination was favorably reported by the committee on June 8, 2023. It is pending before the full Senate.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Hunt speaks Portuguese, German, and Urdu.[1]
