Bulbul Sengupta (13 August 1946 – 22 June 2022) was a Bengali performer, teacher and scholar of Rabindra Sangeet.

Early life[edit]

Bulbul Sen was born in Calcutta, West Bengal, India (now Kolkata, India) to Uma Sen and Bibudh Narayan Sen.

Bulbul started her training in vocal music at the age of 6 and had her first solo in an All India Radio performance at the age of 10 in “golpo dadu-r ashor”.

She graduated with a gold medal from Gitabitan in Rabindra Sangeet. She also learned two classical dance forms (Manipuri Raas Leela and Kathakali) from Gitabitan and completed a 6-year diploma in both.

She attended Sakhawat Memorial Govt. Girls' High School and later Sanskrit College and University, graduating with honors in linguistics.

Career[edit]

She completed her post-graduate studies in Hindustani Classical music from Rabindra Bharati University, and won the prestigious national scholarship in 1965, by virtue of which she pursued further studies at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan.

Her classical music gurus were Sukhendu Goswami and Amiya Ranjan Banerjee. Her primary Rabindra Sangeet guru at Santiniketan was Smt Kanika Bandyopadhyay, and in Kolkata was Sailajaranjan Majumdar, a direct disciple of Rabindranath Tagore. She also studied Nazrul Geeti with Dhirendra Chandra Mitra, who was a direct disciple of Kazi Nazrul Islam.

She was a regular artist at All India Radio and Doordarshan. However, academics was her primary focus, and she served in Rabindra Bharati University from 1976 to 2011, as a Professor, PhD advisor, Head of the department, and finally as the Dean of Fine Arts. She also served as an external examiner in several Universities including Visva-Bharati University.

Personal life[edit]

Bulbul was married to Provakar Sengupta, a former controller for the Imperial Chemical Industries.
