But Muchtar (20 December 1930 – 30 June 1993) was an Indonesian artist and lecturer. His name is widely known through his work in the form of a statue titled Bond (1976) which was installed in front of the Parliament building of the Republic of Indonesia, Senayan, Jakarta. He made his debut as an artist in 1951.
Life[edit]
But Muchtar failed three times to graduate from elementary school. His parents were furious and kicked him out of the house, separating their family relations for three years. In junior high school he was interested in becoming a religion teacher even though as a child he wanted to be a soldier. When he graduated from high school, his dream was to become a writer. After graduating from high school, he wanted to become a diplomat, then enrolled in the Foreign Service Academy, but was rejected. He completed his studies at the Fine Arts Department at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Thereafter he continued at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Art Students League of New York and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all in the United States. But grew up in a devout and Dutch-Dutch family environment. Since childhood he was interested in the pictures created by humans. His first picture made for his own mother, which he remembered very well. His personality as a painter was forged by Ries Mulder, a Dutch lecturer, who headed the Painting Department at ITB after the World War II for more than 10 years.
The works of But Muchtar have been exhibited since 1954 in Indonesia, for example in Bandung, Jakarta or Surabaya, as well as in numerous cities abroad, such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, New Delhi, London, Ithaca, New York, and Rio de Jainero. But Muchtar created hundreds of works since his debut as a painter in 1951, and as a sculptor in 1960, in average about 15 paintings and 4 sculptures annually. At first he adhered to the flow of Realism (arts), then more inclined to Cubism. Among his famous paintings is the Balinese Woman which he painted in 1957 and won him the Stralem Prize at the First Asian Young Artist Exhibition in Tokyo, and Self Portrait, which was published in the book Indonesian Art by Claire Holt. The statue Bond by But Muchtar from 1976 stands prominently in front of the Indonesian Parliament building DPR in Jakarta.
