Byron House (born July 27, 1959) is an American bassist and record producer known for his session and live work with numerous artists. He has been the bassist for Robert Plant's 2010 revival of Band of Joy, country and blues act JD & The Straight Shot, and a longtime collaborator with "newgrass" pioneer Sam Bush.

History[edit]

Born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, House played mainly banjo as a teenager. He met and first jammed with mandolinist, future collaborator and fellow Kentucky native Sam Bush at age 11. Inspired by late Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius' work on Joni Mitchell's 1976 album Hejira, he studied primarily double bass and electric bass in college, both in Europe and America. House worked in a Nashville, Tennessee recording studio as a Fairlight CMI programmer throughout the 1980s while studying the recording techniques of session musicians.

Career[edit]

By 1991, the amalgam of these experiences led to recording and live performances in years since on upright and electric bass with Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Jerry Douglas, Jorma Kaukonen, Patty Griffin, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Loretta Lynn, Marshall Crenshaw, Linda Ronstadt, Rodney Crowell and Nickel Creek,[1] and maintaining an on-going working relationship with mandolinist Sam Bush that started with The Duckbutter Blues Band in 1980, continuing as Bush's sideman until 2010.[2]

House began another long-standing collaboration recording with Nashville, Tennessee singer, songwriter and producer Buddy Miller in 1995 on his album Your Love and Other Lives. In 2010, House ended his stint with The Sam Bush Band when he was recruited by Miller to record and tour with Robert Plant and the Band of Joy.[3] In 2015, House joined country and blues outfit JD & The Straight Shot, fronted by singer, guitarist and American businessman James L. Dolan.[4]

House is also a record producer credited with engineering, mixing and performing on albums he's produced for Kyle Frederick, The Waybacks, and Jorma Kaukonen.
