Campo da Sucupira, sometimes as Campo do Coco is a football (soccer) field west of the center of Praia, Cape Verde at the margins of Várzea bordering Bairro Craveiro Lopes just about 500 meters north of Estádio da Várzea and in a smaller section known as Sucupira. It is currently used for football matches, all of the football (soccer) training are used for practices. Once 100 meters ling and 65 meters wide, the current field is 50 meters long and 36 meters wide.
Etymology[edit]
The etymology of Sucupira was named after the flowers and plants that are similar to those in Brazil to where it is named. The other name Coco is named after a coconut or a cocoa plantation was once located and the plantations once located in the area of Várzea.
About the field[edit]
Its location is just close to Várzea-Craveiro Lopes' Shell gas station.
200 meters east of the field is the Plateau of Praia which is the city center, a few hundred meters to the northeast is the Sucupira Market, Praia's prime market and south are the National Library and the Auditorium.
Clubs that train at the field for most or some times include Académica da Praia,[1] Boavista FC and Travadores[2]
The field was opened in the 1970s as Campo do Coco and was a regular sized field equalling to Várzea's and primarily used for training. It was about 400 meters from the larger stadium.
History[edit]
When the Second Division was introduced in the 1990s, some of its matches were played at the field. When Várzea's stadium was not used due to renovations, for the 2002-03 season its matches were played there especially the 2003 playoffs, the semifinal match between Travadores and Académico do Aeroporto do Sal played there, Travadores lost the first match, the only one with a goal scored.[3] It was a dirt field, later it became probably with grass and in 2007 dirt again. Premier Division matches until late 2006 were played in the field, probably alongside Calabaceira while Second Division matches started to be played at Calabaceira up north. In late 2007, Campo do Coco or da Sucupira, the early field was eliminated and bulldozed.[citation needed] One part near the gas station, a smaller training ground would be built in a new location in the north next to the old field, the rest would be replaced by a large wholesale market and were completed at around 2015. In the early 2010s, the smaller Sucupira field was complete and would only be used for training and would feature and artificial turf.
