The company was established in 2014 by Martijn Peeters, Joep Roebroek en Roel Sadza after gaining earlier experience with P2P-websites such as a sharing platform for textbooks. In the beginning, crowdfunding was used to raise enough seed capital[4]. In 2017, the company was proclaimed as the Rising Star of the Technology Fast 50 by Deloitte and with a turnover growth from 0,14 to 7 million in the years 2015-2018 Camptoo reached the top 20 fastest-growing companies of Europe in 2020[5][6]. After a total loss of revenue during the early stages of the corona crisis, sales records were set in the summer of 2020 due to the hygienic benefits of camping.[7]
In 2021 Camptoo has acquired the platform Out2Camp, which was the first sharing economy platform for campervans in the Nordics.[8]

Car owners can rent out their caravan, motorhome or caravan to third parties through Camptoo, in exchange for financial compensation. 15% commission is paid over the earnings.[9]
