Can Protect Foundation, also known as Can Foundation is a nonprofit organization registered in India, which organizes awareness campaigns and free screening camps for the early detection of breast, cervical and other cancers in India, and also works for women’s healthcare prevention and treatment.[1]
History
Almost 3 years ago, the founder of Can Protect Foundation, Dr Sumita Prabhakar, noticed the large number of incidences and a high death rate of breast and cervical cancer among women in India. She realized that this happened largely due to the low levels of awareness among women about preventive health care, breast self-examination, and a lack of knowledge of Pap smears and HPV. She made it her life’s mission to make things right and started working at a ground level for the prevention of breast and cervical cancer.[2] In a mission to make every woman aware of the methods to control breast cancer and prevent cervical cancer, she started her nonprofit society 'Can Protect Foundation' for preventive healthcare, research, and awareness, and through it pioneered new models in minimizing deaths from cancers in India.
Impact of Can Protect Foundation
'Can Protect Foundation' under the presidency of Dr Sumita Prabhakar, has been regularly working in the field of women’s healthcare, education, and awareness. Every month, Can Protect organizes at least 6 free camps in various cities and a 3-day mega camp every year[3] where many women get screened and are taught about breast self-examination and the importance of Pap smears. Nurturing guidance is also given to the women coming to the camps.[4]
Activities
12000 Women Screened in 3 Years
In the last nearly three years, the Can Protect Foundation has screened 12000 women for the early detection of breast cancer. Can Protect Foundation has not taken any kind of donation for this screening. Many doctors are associated with the Can Protect Foundation, who offer their services in the free multi-specialty and cancer screening medical camps held from time to time.
North India's First Radiation Free Thermo Mammography Machine
The CAN Protect Foundation has recently started investigations of women using the first Radiation-Free Thermo Mammography Machine of North India, on World Cancer Day 2018, which is absolutely free. This machine was inaugurated by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on World Cancer DayCite error: Invalid parameter in <ref> tag. In a program organized at Paramarth Niketan Rishikesh by Can Protect Foundation.
In India, only the Can Protect Foundation is providing free service through the Thermo Mammography Machine.
Breast Self Examination Campaign
Breast self-examination is an effective way of detecting breast cancer, but still about 90% of women in India are not aware of this because there is a lack of awareness. The CAN Protect Foundation, from time to time, with the help of medical field volunteers, teaches women of every class how to perform self-breast examinations. The organization also provides information and organizes training camps for this. So far, Can Protect Foundation has provided training to nearly 5 lakh women.[5]
Mega Camp of 3 Days
In order to take cancer prevention to a higher level and spread awareness among people about the hazards and prevention of breast and cervical cancer, the Can Protect Foundation organizes a Mega Medical Camp in October every year, in which more than 1000 women have received free breast screening. The 2017 camp was organized between October 29th and 31st.[6]
Grants and awards
Since its foundation in 2015, Can Protect Foundation has organized various free screening camps in various cities and villages close to the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, where free breast cancer screening and women healthcare facilities were offered free of cost. The organization has been nominated for the prestigious BMJ award in 2016.[7]
Events
Can Protect Walk by Doctors
On the evening of December 17, 2017, the Can Protect walk was organized with the Can Protect Foundation, in which prominent, reputable doctors from Dehradun spread awareness for breast and cervical cancer while wearing pink clothing. All the doctors were invited by Dr Sumita Prabhakar, President of Can Protect Foundation.[8]
70 km Cancer Awareness Cycle Rally
"Can Protect Foundation" organized a cycle rally for cancer prevention awareness on World Cancer Day 2018. The cycle rally reached the Parmarth Ashram of Rishikesh from Gandhi Park in Dehradun. The rally was welcomed by Swami Chidanand Saraswati at Parmarth Ashram. The main message of this rally was to make the women living in the mountains aware of cancer.[9]
Founder
Dr Sumita Prabhakar is the founder and President of Can Protect Foundation. She has been continuously working for the last 4 years for the prevention of cancer in India and improving women's healthcare by organizing free breast and cervical screening camps and awareness drives, and has screened over 12,000 women for breast cancer and benefited over 5,00,000 women and 1,25,000 families so far. Dr Sumita Prabhakar is one of India's most prominent gynecologists, working for women's healthcare for the last 17 years. She left her lucrative job in Singapore to dedicate her time and energy to the upliftment of women's health in India. She completed her MBBS and MD in Obstetrics & Gynecology from the prestigious Banaras Hindu University, India. She has obtained her membership from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (MRCOG), London. Her achievements include detecting cancer with colposcopy and starting operative endoscopy in gynecology, and she is amongst the few doctors to achieve this feat in India. [10]
