Paschim Banga Vigyan Mancha (PBVM), founded on 23 November 1986 is a non-profit Indian organisation focused on science popularisation.[1][2][3][4]. In the 23 Districts of West Bengal, most of the blocks of the state[5], in the research Institutes and universities have their respective units/committees of Paschim Banga Vigyan Mancha[6]. PBVM also publishes science books[7] with easy explanations on various complex topics and participates in Kolkata Book Fair[8].

Activities[edit]

Restoring Sunderbans mangroves[edit]

PBVM drove a plantation programme to restore the mangroves damaged by Cyclone Amphan. Members planted saplings of mangroves such as kalo bain (Avicennia alba), peyara bain (Avicennia marina), hargoja (Acanthus ilicifolius), kewra (Pandanus odorifer), geoan (Excoecaria agallocha), garan (Ceriops decandra), and sundari (Heritiera fomes)[9]

Skywatching[edit]

PBVM set up a sky watching desk at the state centre to develop scientific temper among students. Sky watching through telescope and observing celestial phenomena became a popular and regular programme of PBVM. Camps were organised in several districts involving younger people for telescope making, viewing slide shows on extraterrestrial phenomena, and night sky watching.[10]

Environment and Biodiversity[edit]

PBVM have been continuously taking different steps for the Better Environment of the state as well as conservation and protection of the biodiversity of nature & Natural Resources. To develop environmental awareness among the students 4750 eco-clubs were established in schools throughout the state. PBVM took important role for tree plantation, preservation of water bodies and conservation of forest and wild animals since its inception. PBVM took continuous efforts for campaign for energy uses and against plastic carry bags, Global warming and unprecedented air pollution and gave recommendations for betterments. Nature study camps are organized to develop environmental awareness among the young.[11][3]

Children Science Festival[edit]

Children Science Festival (CSF) is a unique and most popular program of Paschim Banga Vigyan Mancha. It is an occasion for children to get together and engage in learning. The basic objective of this program is to inculcate science inquisitiveness and scientific temper to the younger generation.

Technology Application[edit]

PBVM Set up district level Science & Technology centres to facilitate the activity of 'technology transfer'. One such unit was set up in the name of great scientist Dr. Kudrat-e-Khuda in Margram in Birbhum (Lok Sabha constituency) district and other such units are being run successfully at Kalna, Burdwan; Haripal, Hoogly & Nabagram, Murshidabad. Moreover, PBVM had taken up large scale implementation programme for setting up 'Improved Chulla' and 'Sanitary Mart' for spreading the health consciousness among rural people. Technologies for production of low-cost housing, aromatic rice, dry flower, herbal colour & herbal aabir, soap, detergent & phenyl making are being done in several districts successfully.

Women in science awareness programme

PBVM developed SAMATA groups in all the districts to ensure participation of women in science awareness programme and also to motivate them in the spirit of self-reliance. Food & adulteration, Food & nutrition, Mother & child health, Health & general cleanliness, Science in kitchen, transfer of household technology are become popular programme under this activity taken up by PBVM.

Sabar Desh Amader Desh[edit]

Sabar Desh Amader Desh ( Sabka Desh Hamara Desh) was a nationwide campaign programme launched on 7th November 2016 (Birth day of C. V. Raman) on the 70th year of our independence by All India Peoples Science Network to uphold democracy, diversity, development, justice and scientific temper.

National Scientific Temper Day[edit]

All India People's Science Network (AIPSN) gave a nationwide call to observe 20th August, the day of assassination of Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, as National Scientific Temper Day (NSTD) to propagate scientific temperament and to stop unprecedented attack on SCIENCE, SCIENTIFIC TEMPER and RESEARCH in India. The theme of the programme was 'ASK WHY?'

Through plays, songs, exhibitions, competitions, hands on experiments, rally for science, publications and films PBVM observed the NSTD programme throughout the state.[12]

Ask How Campaign[edit]

'Ask How campaign' programme is a part of Sabar Desh Amader Desh – Phase II Programme to protect fundamental duties and rights given in Constitution of India by promoting scientific temperament among the people. Paschimbanga Vigyan Mancha organised a week-long 'Ask How campaign' between 23 and 30 January, 2019 throughout the state.
