Cannamedical Pharma GmbH is a wholesaler, importer and pharmaceutical manufacturer of medicinal cannabis based in Cologne, Germany. The company covers about a quarter of the demand for medicinal cannabis flowers in Germany.[1][2]
History[edit]
Cannamedical Pharma GmbH was founded by David Henn in November 2016. The following year, cannabis was released for therapeutic purposes in Germany.[3] Cannamedical's first round of financing took place that year, with Fabian Thylmann investing around one million euros in the company.[4] Initially, Cannamedical sourced cannabis flowers from the Netherlands. In October 2018, the company entered into its first major agreement with Canadian Wayland Group for an import of up to nine tonnes of cannabis flowers over a term of three years.[5] In early 2019, Cannamedical received 15 million euros in another round of funding from US and Germany-based private equity firm Orkila Capital LLC, which was the largest equity investment in a European cannabis startup at the time.[6] In September 2019, Cannamedical imported half a ton of cannabis by air from Portugal, which was the largest amount of a single import to Germany at the time.[7] In 2021, Cannamedical Pharma merged with PS Pharma, a manufacturer and logistics service provider in the narcotics industry. Semdor Pharma Group GmbH was founded as the parent company. Both companies continued to operate independently.[8] In 2022, the company recorded a share of around 25% of the German Cannabis market.[1][2]
Corporate structure[edit]
Since 2021, Cannamedical Pharma GmbH has been a subsidiary of Semdor Pharma Group GmbH. The managing director and founder of Cannamedical Pharma GmbH is David Henn. In 2022, the group employed 200 people and had an annual turnover of 60 million euros.[9] The company is headquartered in Cologne, Germany, with another branch in the UK.[10]
Services and Products[edit]
Cannamedical Pharma acts as a wholesaler and buys from various cannabis producers. As part of the Semdor Pharma Group, Cannamedical Pharma is involved in product research, storage and distribution of medicinal cannabis to the European market.[8] The company supplies medicinal cannabis to clinical facilities and pharmacies. Furthermore, the company provides consulting services for physicians for the treatment with cannabis.[11] Products include cannabis flowers, extracts, dronabinol and medical products. Cannamedical has the largest range of cannabis products on the German market.[12][13] Cannabis flowers are imported from Canada, Portugal, Australia and the Netherlands.[3] Furthermore, the company obtains supplies from Portugal through the US company Tilray.[10]
