Thar Process is a provider of services and equipment related to supercritical carbon dioxide. The company uses CO2 extraction and purification for food ingredients, supplements, cosmetics and pharmaceutical excipients. The company has a focus on optimizing processes in the medical cannabis industry.[3][better source needed]

History[edit]

Thar Technologies was founded in 1990 by CEO Lalit Chordia.[4] Dr. Chordia studied Chemical Engineering. He received his Bachelor of Science from the India Institute of Technology Madras in 1980 and his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in 1985.[5] He started his first company as a student at Carnegie Mellon and focused on utilizing supercritical fluid technology.[citation needed]

DuPont-Merck used the Thar SFC Prep 200 in the late 1990s for drug discovery.[6] In 2007 Thar built and commissioned the world's largest industrial scale supercritical chromatography system, the SFC-600, which is currently being used in Malaysia to separate and purify micronutrients from palm oil. In 2008 Thar obtained a $2 million grant by the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Alternative Technology Program for the development of biodiesel technology. By 2009 Dr. Chordia's company, Thar Instruments, was sold to Waters Corporation.[citation needed]

Thar announced the opening of its CO2 supercritical toll processing plant in their Pittsburgh facility in 2012 which will be used to produce solvent-free products for the nutraceutical and functional food product industries.[citation needed]

In 2016, Thar Pharmaceuticals was acquired by The Grünenthal Group. After Pennsylvania approved medical cannabis the company saw increased demand for its extraction systems.[7]

Thar started offering process-scale low, medium and high-performance liquid chromatography equipment and related services in 2017. Thar began to focus on the cannabis / hemp industry with the Isolator SFC 10 for CBD clinical trials. By early February 2018, Todd Palcic became president and changed the strategic direction of the company towards extracting and purifying cannabinoids.[citation needed]

In 2019 the company completed a private placement for $10M USD to invest in processing facilities in Pennsylvania, New York and Colorado and for use as working capital.[8]

From 2020 onwards Thar manufactured and delivered one of the largest high-performance liquid chromatography plants in existence with a 600 millimeter internal diameter DAC column in the US[citation needed] and expanded its purification offerings to include supplying process-scale supercritical fluid chromatography equipment and related services.[citation needed]
