Carina Bruwer
Carina Bruwer is a South African open water swimmer, musician, and motivational speaker. She is known for her pioneering endurance swims in support of charitable causes, and for founding the award-winning instrumental group Sterling EQ.
Swimming career
Bruwer has completed several significant open water swims, many linked to her charitable initiative, Swim For Hope, through which she has raised over R1 million for South African charities.[1] In 2005, she crossed the English Channel[2] and became the fastest woman to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar[3],[4] She also broke Lewis Pugh’s record for the fastest swim around Robben Island.[5]
In 2006, she became the first woman to successfully swim across False Bay, completing the swim in 10 hours and 58 minutes.[6] In 2014, she became the first woman to complete a four-way crossing of the Strait of Messina, swimming from Sicily to mainland Italy and back twice in under four hours.[7] She is the only person to have completed the "Triple Country Swim" a 21 km route from France, past Monaco, to Italy—undertaken to raise funds for underprivileged South African children learning violin[8]. In 2020, she became the first woman to cross Nelson Mandela Bay[9] in GqeberhaGqeberha. In 2021, she completed the first swim crossing of Walker Bay[10], covering 21 km to raise funds for South African artists affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
