Carl W. Lucas (born April 21, 1974) is an American screenwriter, director, producer, actor, and founder of EchoWolf Productions.

Early film career[edit]

After his time with the U.S. Army from 1992 until 1998, Lucas settled in Roswell, New Mexico.. Here, he worked as a crew member on television and theatrical productions for DreamWorks, Lionsgate, and IFC Films, such as The Eye and Gamer.

While working on these productions, he also continued to write projects of his own. In 2002, he completed his first screenplay called The College Program, a comedy based on his experiences in the military..[1] Lucas' second screenplay, Hollering Creek, The Legend of La Llorona, was shortlisted as one of the top 100 submissions for the HBO original series Project Greenlight out of over 7000 entries. Following these early works were Ilegales, which was selected for screening at several film festivals in New York, Texas, Arizona, and Illinois, winning awards for acting and direction[2]

2009: EchoWolf Productions[edit]

In 2009, Lucas and business partner Joshua Bunting founded EchoWolf Productions with a focus on creating and producing films.[3] Notable films produced by EchoWolf include The Rambler starring Dermot Mulroney and Natasha Lyonne, which was accepted into the 2013 Sundance Film Festival[4] and nominated for awards at SXSW Film and the Sitges International Film Festival, Shout! Factory's first original feature Fender Bender[5], and award-winning drama My Name Is Myeisha, which earned winners laurels at both the Seattle International Film Festival and Slamdance.

Lucas would later team up again with The Rambler director Calvin Lee Reeder as a producer on The Field Guide to Evil. This anthology horror film screened and was positively received at a number of festivals internationally, earning a nomination for the SXSW LUNA® Gamechanger Award (Narrative).

2015 - 2020: The Wave[edit]

Lucas and EchoWolf not only produced new content for other creative talents, but broke new ground with their own screenplays. Beginning pre-production in 2015, The Wave starred Justin Long, Donald Faison, Sheila Vand, and Tommy Flanagan[6]. The Wave premiered at the 2019 Fantastic Fest film festival in Austin, TX[7], and drew comparisons to Martin Scorsese's After Hours and Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind from critics upon release.[8]

2021 - present: The Old Way & Prism Lake[edit]

Projects by Lucas include his script, The Old Way, an American Western starring Nicolas Cage, Shiloh Fernandez, Clint Howard, and Abraham Benrubi. This film garnered additional public attention due to its relationship to the Rust shooting incident, as The Old Way was the first film on which Hannah Gutierrez-Reed served as Lead Armorer immediately preceding the production of Rust (upcoming film). The Old Way was released in January 2023.[9]

In 2022, Lucas' script, Prism Lake, was updated as being in pre-production; this is the second film in a trilogy, the first being 2019's The Wave.

Personal life[edit]

Lucas currently resides in Beverly Hills, California, with his wife, editor Lana Wolverton. He also has served as a programmer and judge for the Slamdance Film Festival.[10]
