Cascade is a classic Bretton card game from the 1800s where players compete to earn the most points. The game is played with a standard deck of playing cards (excluding jokers) and requires keen observation and careful decision-making.

Gameplay[edit]

At the beginning of each round, a full deck of cards is dealt evenly among all players, ensuring that each player has an equal number of cards. Any remaining cards are set aside, forming the "kitty," and are not used in the current round. Players then simultaneously examine their cards and select one to place face down in front of them. All players then pass the remaining cards clockwise to the player on their left. This process continues until all cards have been played and each player has a face-down stack of cards in front of them.

Scoring[edit]

Once all cards have been played, the scores are tallied according to the following rules:

Face Cards Scoring

  • Face Cards: Each face card (Jack, Queen, King) has a direct value: Jacks are worth 1 point, Queens are worth 2 points, and Kings are worth 3 points.
  • Aces: Each Ace card multiplies the number of points gained by face cards of the same suit by 3. For example, a player who collected the Jack, King and Ace of clubs would receive 12 points (3 points for the Jack and 9 for the King).

Numbered Cards Scoring

  • Hearts: Players earn points based on pairs of hearts. For every two numbered heart cards, a player receives 5 points. Uncompleted pairs do not score any points.
  • Clubs: Players earn points based on trips of clubs. For every three numbered club card, a player earns 10 points. Uncompleted trips do not score any points.
  • Spades: A player receives the number of numbered spades cards they collected, squared, as points. For example, having 3 spades would result in 9 points, and 4 spades would result in 16 points.
  • Diamonds: Points are awarded based on the distribution of numbered diamond cards among players. The player with the most diamonds receives 10 points, the player with the second most receives 5 points, and the players with the least or none receive -5 points. Other players do not gain or loose points. If any players are tied for the most or least diamonds, they all receive 10 or -5 points accordingly. If players are tied for the second most number of diamonds, they do not receive any points.

Winning the Game[edit]

The player with the highest total score at the end of the round is declared the winner. Rounds can be played consecutively to determine an overall winner, or the game can be played as a single round for a faster match.
