Cecilia Stalin is a Swedish born and London-based jazz singer and composer, as well as a curator an educator. She rose to fame after her collaboration with Swedish act Koop in their album Waltz For Koop, which was featured on Woody Allen's Match Point film trailer[1] in 2007.

Early years and education[edit]
Cecilia was born in St Petri, Malmo, in Southern Sweden. Her father was a member of in a 10-man Dixieland band, and he taught her to sing jazz at the age of five. She listened to jazz artists such as Billie Holiday, Fats Waller and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as Romantic music. Cecilia wrote her first song at the age of 10 and played her first gig aged 13.
She studied at the Royal College of Music of Stockholm for four years. She attended the Jazz Programme of The New School of New York for a year. Her tutors included Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, Buster Williams and many others.
Career[edit]
She released her first album Straight Up in 2006, which received the Jazzkatten Jazz Best Newcomer Award from Swedish Radio P2[2]. She moved to London in the same year. She provided backing vocals to Alesha Dixon and The Streets the following year.
Cecilia released an album called Step like a giant, celebrating the music of John Coltrane, in 2012. She recorded the EP The Story of Love in Atlanta with Bugz in the Attic's member Daz-I-Kue and India Aire's bassist Khari Cabral Simmons, which culminated in a small European radio tour[3]. She released an album entitled I Wish You Love with her father Bob Stalin in 2016.
Cecilia has performed at a number of venues across the UK. They include Ronnie Scott's[4], Queen Elisabeth Hall, the Barbican, Royal Festival Hall, 606 Jazz Club[5], Southport Weekender, Sunday afternoon with Gilles Peterson & Patrick Forge, Love Supreme Festival[6] and others.
In the year of 2016, she wrote a choir piece for 200 voices for Women of the World Festival at Southbank Centre. She toured mainland China in 2018. She is currently works as a songwriter for other artists, television and film. Her clients include Max Factor and Zentropa. She sings in the soundtrack of the Danish film The Keeper of Lost Causes.
Cecilia founded and currently curates the Fika Session, a networking platform for professionals of the creative industry. She has also curated events for Southbank Centre, including the Crayfish Party[7] and St Lucia Day.
Style and influences[edit]
Her compositions blend various music genres, including jazz, hip-hop, nu-jazz and Brazilian rhythms. Cecilia is an active member of Amnesty International and Survival International. Her music topics include equality, justice, human rights, personal development and mental health issues.
She lists artists of various nationalities amongst her biggest influences: They include American singers and composers Stevie Wonder, Erika Baduh, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Minnie Ripperton and John Coltrane, Swedish musicians Jan Johansson and Stina Norderstam, Brazilian singers Milton Nascimento and Virginia Rodrigues, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, gypsy singer Diego el Cigala, and Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés.
