Celso Freitas (born 18 September 1953) is a Brazilian journalist.

Biography[edit]

He graduated in journalism from Faculdade de Comunicação Social Cásper Líbero, started his career in radio, in Santa Catarina, in the early 1970s, at the age of 16. Serving in the Army Police in Brasília, he drew attention for his voice and was, through an army colonel, invited to present the local part of Jornal Nacional. He stayed in Brasília until 1976, when he was transferred to the São Paulo branch of the station, presenting the local blocks of Jornal Nacional and Jornal Hoje.

In 1983, he was called to replace Sérgio Chapelin, who had accepted an invitation from SBT, presenting Jornal Nacional together with Cid Moreira until 1989, when Sérgio returned to JN and Celso began to present Fantástico and Globo Repórter, the latter already temporarily presented by him several times.

In the 1990s, he proved to be a multimedia professional attuned to advances in technology, developing business communication solutions in creation, presentation and production, in parallel with his career as a presenter at TV Globo. He produces programs such as Hipermídia, shown by the GNT channel, one of the first to deal with information technology in an uncomplicated way. Another successful program produced by Celso is Tribos e Trilhas, in partnership with reporter Neide Duarte, shown on TV Cultura. At the same time, he became the standard voice of network radio CBN, remaining in the position until his change to Rede Record.

He stayed on the benches of Fantástico and Globo Repórter until 1996, when he started to present several programs of the newly created GloboNews, such as Arquivo N and Via Brasil. In 1998, he replaced the actor Tony Ramos in the interactive program Você Decide, where he remained until mid-1999. Since then, his presence on TV Globo has decreased significantly. Celso began to do voiceovers for Fantástico and to present Globo Repórter on Sérgio Chapelin's days off, in addition to recording some albums with excerpts from the Bible, with Cid Moreira. Still at TV Globo, Celso made a documentary about the memory of Roberto Marinho, who died in 2003.

In April 2004, he accepted an invitation from Rede Record (currently RecordTV) to present Domingo Espetacular, a program similar to Fantástico, in which he remained until January 2006, when he began to present Jornal da Record, in a new format similar to the JN presented by Celso for so long. In parallel to Jornal da Record, Celso also presented, until 2009, Repórter Record and Entrevista Record - Bastidores da Notícia, on Record News, until 2012.

In 2013, he became involved in controversy after recording an institutional video for Telexfree, and having his image ostensibly used in disclosures of the scheme.[1] In addition to Jornal da Record, Celso also presented between 11 January 2015 and 16 April 2017, the journalistic program Repórter em Ação.[2]

Personal life[edit]

He is married to the administrator Suely, mother of his daughter Juliana. He is also the father of Marcelo, Renato and Luiz Celso, from his first marriage, when he was 18 years old.[3] His son Marcelo Freitas died on 20 August 2018, aged 45, from a heart attack.[4]
