Sophia Mendonça is a Brazilian journalist and writer.
Career[edit]
Mendonça's first book was the memoir Outro Olhar, released in 2015. The author wrote the book in six months, influenced by Buddhist philosophy and her own daily life. Cultural journalist Elemara Duarte observed that Mendonça acted as a reporter in search of information about herself, writing with objectivity and engaging sincerity.[1] The book was one of the first Brazilian works focusing on the narrative of experiences about autism by an autistic person.[2][3] Mendonça wrote her next book, Danielle, Asperger (2016), during a sleepless night. The book is a novel that portrays the feelings of adolescence.[4]
As a researcher, Mendonça focussed on autism in media.[5] In 2019, she published the journalistic-academic book Neurodivergentes. The work is divided into chapters on intelligence and neurodiversity, autism in women and the relationship between autism and mass media.[6] In 2021, she released a paper about autism spectrum, love and accessibility.[7] The same year, she published a research focusing on social communication by autistic people on COVID-19 pandemic.[8] In 2022, her thesis on narratives of trans and autistic people on Twitter received academic praise from the Federal University of Minas Gerais.[9]
Mendonça also co-hosts the Mundo Autista YouTube channel with her mother Selma Sueli Silva, who is also an autistic woman. They have worked on several[which?] books and podcasts.[7] The channel discusses topics related to the experience of autistic people, including sexuality and therapies,[10] and in 2022, was the oldest active channel with autistic people on YouTube in Brazil.[11]
Accolades[edit]
In 2016, Mendonça became the youngest person ever to receive the Grand Collar of Legislative Merit of Belo Horizonte. In 2019, she was awarded the Special Tribute, an award from the European Union Erasmus+ program.[12]
