Cezmi Güner Omay (22 October 1935 Kemaliye) is Turkish soldier, writer, professor, researcher.

Life[edit]

Associate professor Brigadier General Cezmi Güner Omay, son of Pakize Ertürk Omay and teacher Ahmet Hazmi Omay, was born in Kemaliye, Elazığ in 1935.His parents are from Ağın. He started primary school in Erzincan İnönü Primary School where his father was the head teacher. After his father's death, he changed several primary schools and graduated from Ankara İltekin Primary School in 1947, and Ankara Cebeci Secondary School in 1950. He started Bursa Işıklar Military High School in 1950, graduated in 1954, and entered the Turkish Military Academy War School in the same year. As a military student, he started studying Mathematics-Astronomy in the Faculty of Sciences in Ankara University, and graduated in 1958 as a lieutenant. He is widowed and has a son.

Career[edit]

Omay worked as a mathematics teacher in the Turkish Military Academy from 1958 to 1960, and as a Project Officer in the Department of Research in the Development of the Ministry of Defense from 1960 to 1962. He was awarded a NATO Fellowship to study in United States, and earned a master's degree in 1964 from Yale University. From 1964 to 1974, he served as an Operational Research Specialist in the Department of Research and Development of the Ministry of Defense while he worked as a part-time professor of Astrophysics in the Faculty of Sciences in Ankara University.[1] In 1971, he earned a degree of PhD in Mathematics-Statistics from the Faculty of Sciences in Ankara University, and became an associate professor in 1978. Güner Omay worked as a part-time professor in the Department of Operational Research in the Turkish Military Academy from 1974 to 1984. Omay got promoted to Brigadier General in 1984, and served as the Head of the Department of Defense Research of the Turkish General Staff from 1980 until his retirement in 1992. Güner Omay was assigned as a member of the Board of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) in January 1989, and a member of the Science Council from September 1993 until his retirement in September 2001. In 1999, he served for a short time as acting President of TÜBİTAK.[2][3] He was a consultant for the documentary film Işıkla Yazılmış Öyküler (Stories Written with Light) produced by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) in 2005.[4] Omay has been the Chairman of Board of the Scientific and Technical Research Foundation (BİTAV), established in 1996.[5]
