Changed Movement
The CHANGED Movement is a grassroots network of people who have voluntarily left LGBTQ behind. The movement was born in 2018 when co-founders Elizabeth Woning and Ken Williams decided to respond to California’s legislative bill AB2943, which amended the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act to include sexual orientation-change efforts.
Woning and Williams responded to the advocation of Bill AB2943 by publishing the first edition of “CHANGED #oncegaystories,” a book of short autobiographies of people who have left LGBTQ for a variety of reasons. In addition, Williams and Woning testified of their own former LGBTQ experiences in State Assembly and Senate hearings.
Participants in the CHANGED book also gathered in Sacramento on June 11 and 12, 2018, to distribute the books to legislators and participate in a public rally on the Capitol steps featuring their stories, attended by hundreds of opponents of the bill. More than two and a half hours of testimony of men and women who had left LGBTQ behind was live streamed on Facebook. The rally led to the formation of a new movement -- CHANGED Movement, a growing relational network of people who have “left LGBTQ because they wanted to.” NBC News[1] reported on this gathering in Sacramento. In October 2019 and June 2021, CHANGED rallied in Washington, D.C., to lobby against the federal Equality Act and let legislators and political action groups there know they exist.
CHANGED Movement’s primary focus is on the stories of men and women who illustrate the complexity and variety of LGBTQ experiences. CHANGED Movement advocates for free speech, freedom of conscience, counseling choice, and religious liberty. The Washington Post names Changed among different ministries and organizations in a 2019 article[2] on the comeback of the ex-gay movement.
CHANGED now provides community and refuge for people exiting LGBTQ. CHANGED also advocates against legislation that hinders freedom of conscience, free speech, and freedom of religion for people leaving LGBTQ behind. CHANGED comes alongside those seeking answers or a way out of the LGBTQ experience and protects their pathways to peace.
