Charin Mendis or Mendes (Sinhala: /චරින්/; born December 1986), is a Sri Lankan singer-songwriter, musician, producer, audio engineer, and entrepreneur. His first single with EIQ Records, “About Us” was released in March 2018. In April 2019, he premiered one of five songs “Satellites”, which featured Brian McKnight Jr. of the McKnight family.

Early life[edit]

Charin began his education at St. Peter’s College, Colombo. He later joined Royal College, Colombo, to study for the GCE Advanced Level Examinations.[1]

Charin grew up in a musical family.[2] He took piano lessons from his grandmother at a young age. He also taught himself to play the guitar and compose on his father’s piano during his teenage years.[3]

Career[edit]

In the early 2000s, Charin was the lead singer of the band ‘JADA’.[4] The band performed at festivals and concerts in his hometown Colombo, before he went solo. He later moved to Singapore to study Performing Arts at LASALLE College of the Arts. In Singapore he performed with and fronted jazz ensembles.[3] In 2009, while he was still an undergraduate of LASALLE at the age of 23,[5] he was featured as a lead soloist with the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka (SOSL) for its 52nd season, at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.[6]

His family moved to England, where he qualified as an audio engineer and producer at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford, Surrey.[7] While studying at ACM, he learned the ropes of the UK music industry and studied under Chad Jackson.[8] He is a B.A. Jazz (Honours) graduate of Leeds Conservatoire.[7] He has worked with international artistes as a producer, engineer and writer,[9] and became a voting member of the ‘Songwriters Hall of Fame(New York).[10][11]

In 2016, he signed with Universal Arts (UK).[12] In May 2017, in an interview with Cosmopolitan Magazine, Charin mentioned that his musical success is owed to a combination of talent, hard work, studying different areas of the music industry.[8] In December 2017, Charin released the single "Never Give Up" which featured Brian McKnight Jr. of the McKnight family.[2]

In March 2018, his first single "About Us", was released through 'EIQ records'. In April 2019, he premiered the song “Satellites”, which featured Brian McKnight Jr.[3] In October 2019, Charin's album “Retrograde Brigade” was released.[citation needed] Following this release, he recorded and released two more songs with Brian McKnight Jr.; “Heart of The Problem” in December 2019, and “I Wanna Love You Again” in July 2020.[citation needed]

Charin also released his jazz-funk song “Purple People" in 2020.[7] Charin's first Sinhalese language single “Aalakam” was released in August 2020.[13] In September 2020, Charin appeared on YES FM's Home Grown Top 15 radio show as a guest host with Yasmin Yousuf.[3] In November 2020, Charin released his first international duet “Nothing” with NFRTAY.[14]

In July 2021, Charin recorded a duet with Brian McKnight Jr. titled "Marry Your Daughter (Aradhana)" which was released under ABS-CBN Corporation's Tarsier Records.[15] The track was produced by Tarsier Record’s manila-based superstar producer Moophs. The song debuted on Spotify's official NMF Playlist in two countries at once, both in India and Sri Lanka. It has since been trending for over 8 weeks on Spotify's official playlist 'Sinhala Pop'.[16]
