Charles William Ledbetter (April 5, 1922 – July 23, 2003) was one of the Tuskegee Airmen, retiring from the United States Air Force as a master sergeant after 30 years of active service.

He participated in World War II, the Korean War (where he flew night missions in B-26 bombers as an engineer and gunner as part of the 3rd Bomb Wing), and in Vietnam.[2]

Ledbetter was later a journalist for Black Voice News and involved in local politics.[3]

Awards[edit]

Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Tuskegee Airmen in 2006[4]

Death[edit]

He is interred at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.[2][5]

The Tuskegee Airmen became known for flying the P-51 aircraft with red markings that distinguished the Tuskegee Airmen included red bands on the noses of P-51s as well as a red rudder; their P-51B and D Mustangs flew with similar color schemes, with red propeller spinners, yellow wing bands and all-red tail surfaces.[1]
