Claire Howell (born September 16, 1997), professionally known as Charley, is an Australian singer and songwriter.[1] She states her biggest influences are "Howell was chosen for the Australian Television show, Australia Decides (2022), using her third single, "I Suck At Being Lonely". Her running order was fourth of eleven contestants, and placed fourth after both the jury and public votes were counted, amassing a total of 63 points (33 via jury vote, 30 via televote).[2]

Early life[edit]

Howell grew up in a family of Musicians and is based in Sydney, Australia. She performed in local musicals[3], and also started a band with her cousins, which she states was a "learning experience, [more] than anything else". [1]. Howell was also mentored by UK singer Jessie J, and worked alongside CXLOE, and Carla Wehbe[3].

Career[edit]

On the 5th of March 2021, Charley signed with EMI Music Australia for her debut single, "Hard For Me" [4]. "Hard For Me" was produced by Beats by Breakfast (stylised all lowercase), and written by Howell, Mitchell John Thompson, Stephen Erik Schmuldt, and Thomas Walter Jordan, dubbed a song that “embraces female sexuality and unapologetic love” [1]. Hard For Me attracted support from "Spotify, Apple Music, NME, Pilerats, Life Without Andy and more". [1] Charley attended the ARIA awards after the release of her song.[5] Her second single, "Arizona", was "borne from anxiety” according to the Australian Singer [6]. Her third single, "I Suck At Being Lonely" was selected for Eurovision – Australia Decides, which came 4th out of 11 contestants.
