The Chechen raid on Nazran was an armed clash between Ingush and Chechen groups, which, according to oral tradition, occurred shortly after Nazran was founded by Kartskhal Malsagov.[2] The conflict was related to the struggle over lands at the confluence of the Nazranka and Sunzha rivers[3] and reflects the process of establishing boundaries between Ingush and Chechen settlements in the 18th century.
Raid
When the Chechens, having learned that Kartskhal had taken possession of a place which they considered to be in dispute between them and the Kabardians, went to war against him and, having lost this battle, fled; the Ingush set out in pursuit of them with naked sabers in their hands, as a result of which the Chechens were driven back by the Ingush as far as the Nitty-khoy-khi River.[4]
