Choi Kisu (Korean: 최기수, born on October 2, 1990), better known by the mononym KISU (Korean: 기수) and also known by his former stage name Soo (Korean: ), is a South Korean singer, songwriter, actor and director.
Kisu has officially started his musical career as a member of the South Korean boy band 4K (Korean: 포케이) on June 12, 2012, with the release of Rocking Girl.[1] Later, on September 6, 2012, he made his debut as a member of the boy band 24K (Korean: 투포케이) through the release of the mini album Hurry Up.[2]
He has made his acting debut on December 2016, after the release of the Chinese-Korean webdrama Love at the Tip of the Tongue (Chinese: 舌尖的恋爱, Korean: 혀끝의 연애), in which he played as the male lead.[3][4]
In 2017, he has made his debut as a soloist, on December 22, with the release of his first mini album Sweet Lie, under the name Soo.[5]
He is no longer a member of 24K since June 27, 2019 (KST).
He's been discharged from the military on June 19, 2020 and later, on January 29, 2021 he has released BOY, his first single under the name KISU.[6][7]

Career[edit]

4K and 24K[edit]

Kisu debuted as a member of the boy band 4K (Korean: 포케이) on June 12, 2012 with the release of the single album Rocking Girl. The group later added more members and, on September 6, 2012, they debuted as 24K (Korean: 투포케이) through the release of Hurry Up.
In 2017, he took part, alongside the other 24K's members, in the audition for the survival show MIXNINE.[8]
On June 27, 2019, after his agency announced on 24K's fancafe the changes in the group's line-up[9], he wrote on Twitter that he's no longer a 24K's member.

Military enlistment[edit]

On May 11, 2018, Kisu's agency, Choeun Entertainment, announced on 24K's fancafe that the group would add a new member and that Kisu would soon be enlisted.[10]
On November 8, 2018, he began his mandatory military service as conscripted police officer.
Kisu took his final military leave on June 10, 2020, day in which he had an anticipated ceremony for his discharge (due to the military's policy on COVID-19); he was officially discharged on June 19, 2020.

Bonnie N Clyde's promotions[edit]

On May 25, 2018, 24K released their mini album Bonnie N Clyde.

Despite having recorded all of the songs of the album, one of them being a self-produced solo track dedicated to the fans, TO. FOR YOU, Kisu hasn't been able to promote with the group in the shows.

Because of his impending enlistment, he was also banned from travelling and couldn't take part in 24K's World Tour. As a gift for the fans, Kisu recorded a video where he sang the English version of TO. FOR YOU, which was later shown during the concerts.

Acting and solo career[edit]

Kisu debuted as an actor in 2016, after playing, as the male lead, in the Chinese-Korean webdrama Love at the Tip of the Tongue (Chinese: 舌尖的恋爱, Korean: 혀끝의 연애), which was released on the website Youku starting from December 24, 2016.
On December 22, 2017, under the stage name Soo, he released his self-composed first mini album, Sweet Lie, marking his debut as a soloist and as a singer-songwriter.
Before his enlistment, Kisu has prepared a new song, Goodbye.[11] The digital single and the music video were later released on December 31, 2018.[12]
After leaving his former agency, Choeun Entertainment, Kisu has stopped using the stage name Soo; on September 2020, in one of his interviews, he publicly revealed his intention of using as his new stage name his own name, KISU, which means "the one who is ahead, vanguard".[13][14]
On January 22, 2021, on YouTube it has been published a prologue film that announces that Kisu's new single BOY, which is his first release since his discharge from the military other than his first single under his new stage name KISU, will be released on January 29, 2021.[15][16][17][18]

Departure from Choeun Entertainment[edit]

On the midnight of February 2, 2020 (KST), through a long message on his Instagram's account and on his Facebook's page, Kisu revealed that, with the end of the 1st of February 2020, his contract with Choeun Entertainment, which previously started on April 1, 2012, also came to an end.

Beyond Ent[edit]

On June 19, 2020, after Kisu's discharge from the army, Beyond Ent, through a post on their Instagram's account, announced that Kisu joined their company as a new artist.

Filming and editing videos[edit]

During his period in the military, Kisu has become interested in the directing and in the editing of videos, an interest that took a real form on January 11, 2020 through the release on Youtube of the video for his cover of I'm so tired... (originally sang by Lauv and Troye Sivan), which marks his first attempt at directing and editing a music video.
Since then he has filmed and edited almost all of the videos that he later published on his Youtube channel[19] and on January 1, 2021 (KST), during a live streaming on his V LIVE channel, he revealed that becoming a music video director is one of his wishes for 2021.
On January 3, 2021 the singer Park Pil Kyu, who is friends with Kisu, has released his 1st digital single Pervade: the music video's making film (released on January 3, 2021) has been filmed and edited by Kisu.

Airborn Music[edit]

At the beginning of 2021 Kisu has joined the company Airborn Music and has started working as a director and video editor.

Participation in a soundtrack, project group and OST release[edit]

On December 8, 2020, through an interview with View of the Arts[20], Kisu informed the fans about two of his new works. He first revealed to have participated in the title song of KakaoTV's drama A Love So Beautiful (Korean: 아름다웠던 우리에게): he has provided the guide vocals and the chorus vocals for Recently (Korean: 요즘 자꾸만), the song sang by the webdrama's lead actor Kim Yohan, and he also participated in the direction of Kim Yohan's recording session of the song.[21][22][23]
He also announced that he's working on a project album together with some of his friends, who include Almeng from K-pop Star 3 and Park Pil Kyu, who appeared in Superstar K 3 in a police officer's uniform.
On January 1, 2021 (KST), during a live streaming on V Live, he revealed that the project group has 5 members in total and that it will be named Nineteen Hood, because they all met when they were nineteen years old.
On September 30, 2021, the soundtrack album of the Korean webdrama Place of Meeting (Korean: 만남의 광장) has been released on Korean music platforms; among the tracks there's also a song co-written and sung by KISU, Am I Doing Well Enough (Korean: 잘하고 있을까), which is his first soundtrack release.

K-POP WORLD FESTIVAL[edit]

On 2021 and 2022 Kisu has been chosen as a member of the jury for the competition K-POP WORLD FESTIVAL.
On June 11, 2021 and on June 24, 2022 he judged the contestants who performed in France, at La Rochelle. In 2021 he's been a judge also for the contest's final, which has been streamed online, from Paris, on July 3, 2021.
