Chris Nylstoch, born 11 January 1979, is an Australian composer and performer,[1] based in Melbourne, he is best known as a free-improv[2] multi-instrumentalist regularly appearing at festivals[3][4] and concerts series such as the Now Now,[5][6][7][8] MIUC.[9]
Career[edit]
In 1998, Nylstoch performed live on TV on Edmonton's Big Breakfast Show premiering a new composition, 'Bodies Of Water' with "The World's Fastest Drummer"[10][11], Tim Waterson. From 2002-4 Nylstoch was a member[12] of the historic Splinter Orchestra[13] which included notewothy artists such as Jon Rose, Chris Abrahams[14] Cor Fuhler[15] and other 'leading experimentalists[16]' Matt Earle and Adam Sussmann[17]. In 2003-4 Nylstoch participated in expanded cinema[18] events of OFF[19] and SMIC.[20][21]
He was a co-founder (with Bonnie Hart) of the legendary x-music video production company Venting Gallery[22] that made 1000 short movies about 'x-music[23]' between 2004-2007. In 2006, Nylstoch was honored to have his video work Mistreatment of Memory exhibited at The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (Tōkyō-to Shashin Bijutsukan) alongside such noted international artists Dirk Debruyn and Maya Deren. Nylstoch's many artistic collaborations include ongoing works and performances with world renowned musical instrument inventor[24][25] Rod Cooper[26], Sun of the Seventh Sister, Life Groove Orchestra[27], 'The Mermaids'[28]'and a series of works and tours with noted multimedia artist Emit Snake-Beings and was featured at Hamilton Underground Film Festival. In 2009, Unaustralians appeared[29] on the TV show RAGE. Incorrectly described as a 'cultural terrorist' by Cat Hope on p69 of Audio Explorations.[30] In 2010, Nylstoch[31] appeared[32] in the multi award-winning TV Documentary Orchids My Intersex Adventure. In 2010 also Nylstoch performed at the "50 bands in 50 minutes" world premiere at Iwaki Auditorium[33] and a public Cave Clan event, where the general public where led though an underground resonant chamber as part of the What is Music festival.
Also in 2010, Nylstoch co-founded the Foundation for Contemporary Music & Culture Inc. (Vic), a not for profit cultural organization[34] with aims to preserve music that fell outside of the selection criteria collections such as the NFSA and the AMC[35].In July 2019 Nylstoch performed at the month long BDTD Blindside exhibition.[36] In 2019 Nylstoch appeared in concert with Richard Fielding at the Elevator Space in Lismore, Australia as part of the unique Frakreactor series. Nylstoch's pre 2020 releases have become sort after collectors items, with one acetate 12" release fetching over $US 311.[37]
