Christianity

Christianity is a monotheistic religion based on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Its adherents, known as Christians, believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and the savior of humanity, whose coming as the Messiah was prophesied in the Hebrew Scriptures of Judaism, called the Old Testament in Christianity and chronicled in the New Testament. Christianity is the world's largest religion, with over 2.4 billion followers, comprising a third of its global population.

Devotion

Christians believe in one God that created and preserves the world. His incarnation, earthly ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection—which Christians refer to as "the gospel"—provide a basis for their faith. Christians also share beliefs about eternity, including life after death (resurrection), that are not shared by most other religions. Like other Abrahamic religions, Christianity has played a significant role in Western culture.

Existence

Christianity originated with the Ministry of Jesus in 1st-century Roman Judea. According to the Gospels, Jesus was a Jewish teacher and healer who proclaimed the imminent kingdom of God and was crucified c. 30–33 AD. His followers believed he was raised from the dead and ascended into heaven. The earliest followers of Jesus were apparently Jewish converts, referred to as Early Christians.

Theology

The inclusion of Gentile God-fearers leads to a split between them and Jews who rejected this innovation (see Great Schism). Prominent figures such as Augustine of Hippo were deeply influential in forming early Christian theology. As Christianity spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages through missionary work and colonization, it acquired certain cultural traits that distinguish it from other Abrahamic religions, namely Hellenization (the adoption of classical Greek culture) and Latinization (the adoption of classical Latin culture). Through missionary work and colonization, Christianity spread to East Asia, Australasia, sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, North America, Mesoamerica, parts of South America, and parts of Southeast Asia.
