Christopher McCall is a museum director and curator specializing in photography.[1] He is the founding director of Pier 24 Photography, one of the largest spaces in the world devoted to photography.[2]
Education and Early Career[edit]
McCall received his MFA in Photography from the California College of the Arts (CCA) in 2003.[2] At CCA, he studied alongside Larry Sultan and Jim Goldberg, both of whom he considers significant influences.[2] s Sultan recommended that Andrew Pilara, Pier 24 Photography's founder, speak with McCall as he was conceptualizing the organization and space.[3]
Prior to his work at Pier 24, McCall taught photography, film, and visual literacy at The Urban School of San Francisco.[4]
Experience at Pier 24 Photography[edit]
McCall was hired as director of Pier 24 Photography at the age of 33; he had not worked in a museum of gallery before that time.[5] [5] The exhibition space at Pier 24 Photography is 28,000-square-feet with 17 galleries.[6] While the space was under construction, McCall and Pilara decided to exclude wall labels from their exhibition installations, a decision informed by their belief that the best way to understand photography is by looking at pictures closely, not reading text.[6]
Together with Jim Goldberg, McCall established the Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program, a collaboration between CCA, Pier 24 Photography, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Headlands Center for the Arts.[7][8] This program brings photographers and arts critics to the Bay Area where they give free public lectures and work with students at the art school.[7] The Larry Sultan Photography Award represents an extension of that program in which one photographer each year receives a residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts and a cash award.[9]
At present, McCall is collaborating with Bay Area based artist Libby Black on "Photobook as Lineage," a project in which Black will re-create 50 significant photobooks as painted paper sculptures; the project will culminate in an publication and exhibition at the Aperture Foundation space in New York.[10]
