Albert Liu (Chinese: 劉峻誠, born April 14, 1981) is a Taiwanese-American entrepreneur and businessman. He is an expert in Electronic engineering and Computer science and the founder and president of Kneron. Liu is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
He invented single-layer multi-point capacitive touch panel technology, low-power optically driven integrated high-frequency circuit technology, and reconfigurable deep learning AI architecture. These technologies have been widely adopted in the industry and integrated into smartphones through joint solutions with Samsung, Qualcomm, and MediaTek. Commercialized products using these technologies have reached billions in volume.
His areas of expertise include computer-aided design, Artificial intelligence, Integrated circuit design, touch panel technology, Image processing, electronic simulation, algorithm development, and advanced high-speed semiconductor processes. His reconfigurable AI chip architecture won the IEEE Darlington Award, the highest honor from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.
His book, Artificial Intelligence Hardware Design: Challenges and Solutions, was ranked 6th among the 100 most influential books in AI by CNN and Forbes.
Early Life and Education
During his student years, Liu received scholarships from Raytheon and the University of California. He also won the global championship in the IBM Software Competition (2007 IBM Problem Solving Award). He was nominated for the Best Paper Award at IEEE/Association for Computing Machinery ICCAD 2007 and IEEE ICCD 2008.
In addition, he received the IEEE TCAS Darlington Award and, in 2023, the IEEE CTSoc Invention Leadership Award.
Career
Liu has been active in academia, industry, and technology sectors. He has taught courses on computer vision, artificial intelligence, and intelligent hardware at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He has also served as a technical reviewer for various international academic journals and held positions as a research scientist at UCLA and a visiting professor at National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, and National Cheng Kung University.
During his career, he participated in Samsung's International Talent Program and its R&D center, contributing to the development of the first-generation Samsung Galaxy smartphone. He also worked on the core technology of single-layer touch panels at MediaTek and led AI technology development at Qualcomm's multimedia R&D center.
