Citybus Route 2A is a bus route operated by Citybus on Hong Kong Island. It runs between Yiu Tung Estate and Exhibition Centre station, serving districts including Sai Wan Ho, Kornhill, Quarry Bay, North Point, Fortress Hill, Causeway Bay, Wan Chai and Admiralty.

Description

The route provides cross-island connectivity between the Eastern District and Wan Chai/Central business areas. It operates in both directions, with the Yiu Tung Estate-bound service returning via the same general corridor through Queen’s Road East, Hennessy Road and King’s Road.

The route is one of the major trunk services linking residential areas in Siu Sai Wan and Shau Kei Wan with employment and commercial hubs along Hong Kong Island.

History

  • 2 May 1994: CMB Route 2A commenced service to tie in with the occupation of Yiu Tung Estate, operating between Yiu Tung Estate and Wan Chai Ferry Pier. Both directions were rerouted via the eastern section of Yiu Hing Road and Sun Sing Street, and were also detoured via Holy Cross Path, Hing Man Street, and Hoi An Street towards Sun Sing Street for the Yiu Tung-bound direction.
  • 9 April 1996: The route was rerouted via a section of Yiu Hing Road near Hing Tung Estate.
  • 23 August 1996: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.
  • 1 September 1998: Operation of the route was transferred to New World First Bus (NWFB) following the end of CMB franchised bus services.
  • 2000: The route was upgraded to full air-conditioned service.
  • 26 August 2000: Interchange concessions between Routes 38, 42, and Routes 2A, 2X, 8, and 8P were introduced, marking the first set of Octopus interchange concessions by NWFB.
  • 6 May 2001: The original stop at "Sunbeam Theatre" on King’s Road was cancelled for the Yiu Tung-bound direction and replaced by the "Kam Hong Street" stop.
  • 9 February 2003: The section fare between Tai Hong House and Yiu Tung Estate was reduced.
  • 31 May 2004: A new Octopus interchange concession with Route 8X was introduced to facilitate the relocation of its terminus from Admiralty (Rodney Street) to Happy Valley (Lower).
  • 20 June 2004: A new Octopus interchange concession with Route 19 was introduced to facilitate the relocation of its terminus from Shau Kei Wan to North Point Ferry Pier.
  • 26 March 2006: A new Octopus interchange concession with Route 2X towards Shau Kei Wan was introduced for the Yiu Tung-bound direction.
  • 1 July 2013: To tie in with the franchise extension of NWFB, Octopus interchange concessions with Routes 63, 65, and 81A were introduced.
  • 25 November 2013: An interchange concession with Route 678 was introduced.
  • 28 December 2013: An interchange concession with Route 110 was introduced to serve affected passengers in Quarry Bay following the latter’s withdrawal.
  • 17 May 2015: The Wan Chai terminus was relocated to Wan Chai North Temporary Public Transport Interchange to tie in with the construction of Exhibition Station (later renamed Exhibition Centre Station) of the MTR Sha Tin to Central Link. Both directions were rerouted via Convention Avenue and Hung Hing Road. On the same date, some afternoon peak trips departing from Yiu Tung on Mondays to Saturdays were changed to terminate at Causeway Bay (Hysan Place). New stops were added at "Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre" on Fleming Road for the Wan Chai-bound direction, and at "Wan Chai Ferry Pier" on Convention Avenue for the Yiu Tung-bound direction.
  • 1 June 2016: To tie in with the extension of Citybus Franchise I, an Octopus interchange concession with Citybus Route 5B was introduced.
  • 5 November 2017: A new interchange concession with Route 18X (towards Kennedy Town) was introduced for the Wan Chai North-bound direction.
  • 28 May 2018: The "Next Bus" arrival time enquiry service was introduced on this route.
  • 14 May 2022: The terminus was relocated from Wan Chai North to the newly opened Exhibition Centre Station Public Transport Interchange. The "Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre" stop on Fleming Road (Wan Chai-bound) was cancelled, as was the "Wan Chai Ferry Pier" stop on Convention Avenue (Yiu Tung-bound).
  • 1 July 2023: Operation of the route was transferred to Citybus following the merger of the Citybus and NWFB franchised bus networks.
  • 19 August 2024: An interchange concession with Route 682B was introduced following the cancellation of Route 682C.

Accidents

  • 28 February 1998: At about 2:00 p.m., a Yiu Tung Estate-bound CMB Dennis Condor (DL38, registration EH7098) collided with a van on Hennessy Road. No injuries were reported.
  • 12 September 2010: At around 4:00 p.m., a Dennis Trident (fleet number 1075, registration HY1740) heading towards Yiu Tung Estate struck a 70-year-old pedestrian at the junction of King’s Road near Man Hong Street. The pedestrian was run over and later succumbed to injuries in hospital.
  • 12 April 2014: At nearly 5:00 p.m., a Dennis Trident (fleet number 3305, registration JJ3576) heading towards Yiu Tung Estate crashed into a stone pillar of a building at the junction of Hennessy Road near Marsh Road. No injuries were reported.
  • 29 January 2017: At around 11:00 p.m., an Enviro500 MMC (fleet number 8472, registration TD5052) operating on Route 8X towards Siu Sai Wan was waiting at a traffic light at the junction of King’s Road eastbound near Jupiter Street when it was struck from behind by a Yiu Tung-bound Enviro500 (fleet number 5519, registration PS2561), which failed to stop in time.
