Cloggs.co.uk, more commonly known as just Cloggs, is a primarily online footwear retailer based in Birmingham, West Midlands, England.[1] It currently comprises three physical locations in Shrewsbury, York and Newcastle in addition to their website. In 2013, Cloggs was purchased out of administration by the JD Sports Fashion Group and now operates as a subsidiary of the group.[2]

History[edit]

Cloggs was founded by Russell Thomas in 1979[3] and was originally located in the Oasis market in Birmingham City Centre[4] The company began trading online in 1998[5] and was originally located in the Oasis market in Birmingham City Centre.[4] In 2008, the company became a core footwear retailer, having previously worked with other businesses based in the Oasis.[4] In 2009, Cloggs opened a store in Birmingham’s Bullring shopping centre,[6] which closed after the firm entered administration in 2013.[3]

Russell was forced to take early retirement as a result of illness and his sons Nick & Chris took ownership of the business in 2002.[7] Cloggs was amongst the first pioneering retailers to sell shoes online and over the next 10 years established itself as one the leading online independent retailers of branded footwear.[8] Cloggs entered administration at the end of 2012[4] but was swiftly purchased by the JD Sports Fashion Group in a pre-pack administration deal in February 2013,[2] becoming the latest in a growing number of brands owned by the group.

December 2013 saw the relaunch of the firm on the high street, with a physical location in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.[9] Shrewsbury was chosen as a location that fit the firm's target demographic.[10] In December 2014, Cloggs opened a new store in York city center.[11] Cloggs has further plans for another 5 locations planned within the coming months.[3]
