The Coal Research Establishment (CRE) was a government research institute in north Gloucestershire for the UK coal industry.

History[edit]

It was founded on 1 September 1948 as the Central Research Establishment, next to the former RAF Stoke Orchard, which had trained glider pilots. The Mining Research Establishment in Middlesex was created in 1951, and from 1952 the CRE only researched coal burning and processing, not the extraction of coal.[1]

Closure[edit]

It closed in December 1997, after going private in 1994.

It became the Orchard Business Centre, being demolished for housing in 2015.

Visits[edit]

On Friday 8 March 1957 the Duke of Edinburgh made a four-hour visit. [2]

Structure[edit]

The site was next to the eastern side of the M5 motorway.

Research[edit]

There were around 360 employees there in the 1970s; its computer was in Staffordshire.
