David Toritseju Tonayan, professionally known as Codest Boi, is a Nigerian musician,songwriter and Afro-pop singer.[1] He collaborated with award-winning singer Teni on the 2019 hit single "Laye Mi," which was released on the 15th of March 2019.[2]
Early life[edit]
Born on 3 October 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria, he grew up in Lagos and moved to Ghana in 2014.[3] David Toritseju Tonayan, later known as Codest Boi, grew up immersed in the city's rich Afrobeat scene. The music of Fela Kuti, particularly his innovative blend of traditional melodies and driving rhythms, significantly influenced Codest Boi's musical development and sparked a deep interest in the genre's expressive potential.[4]
Career[edit]
After releasing his debut song, "Ajara", in 2011,[5] Codest Boi moved to Ghana in 2014 to pursue a professional music career.[4] There, he released his first single, "Jaye", on 15 June 2018.[3][6] On 12 October 2018, Codest Boi released "Gradually", an Afropop track that combined traditional melodies with contemporary beats, contributing to his growing recognition within the genre.[7][8][9] On 15 March 2019, Codest Boi collaborated with Teni on the single "Laye Mi" which gained recognition for its blend of catchy Afropop melodies and thoughtful lyrics exploring themes of love and loss.[10][2][11][12][13] On 13 September 2019, he released "Johanna".[14][15]
