Colin Alwin Harris (born June 6, 1974) is an American professor and academic administrator, serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Central Florida Institute of Technology in Winter Park, Florida since 2009.[1] Harris has an eclectic mix of professional experience in a number of different industries. He served six years in the United States Air Force, followed by three years working for the Department of Defense. He currently works as a member of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Over the years, Harris has also worked as an American independent film director, producer, and screenwriter. He made his feature film directorial debut with Haima.
Early life
Harris was born in Kitty, a small village in Georgetown, Guyana in South America to Lennox James Harris, a member of the GDF and Vivyenne Lucretia Harris, a store manager at the local government-run shopping plaza. When his father died, the family relocated to Brooklyn, New York. In Brooklyn, he attended Prospect Heights High School. After he graduated high school, the family moved to Queens, New York.
Education
Harris earned his bachelor's degree in Electronic / Instrumentation Technologies from Excelsior College, a master's degree in Management Information Systems from Troy University. After completing his master's degree, he enrolled at Post University and earned a graduate level certificate in Leadership. Harris is a current doctoral candidate of the University of West Florida and is conducting research in the area of Instructional Technology.
Career
Chief Education Officer/Professor
Harris is the Chief Executive Officer and a Professor at the Central Florida Institute of Technology. He holds a joint appointment in technology and cinematic studies.
Film
Over the years, Harris has worked as an independent camera operator, photographer, editor, filmmaker, director, and producer. He shot and edited the 2004 “Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame Expo”. In 2006, he directed and produced a 21-minute short film, “Flawed Proposal”.[2] In 2012, Harris worked on the production of the award-winning feature documentary “Pui Chan: Kung Fu Pioneer”.[3] He is the writer, director, editor, and producer of the feature-length film, “Haima”.[4]
Federal Government
In September 1999, Harris joined the United States Armed Force by enlisting for six years with the U.S. Air Force as a Ground Radar Systems Specialist at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. After six years of active duty service, he transitioned to civil service and worked for three years as an Airfield Systems Specialist for the Department of the Air Force. In late 2008, he took a position as an Airways Transportation Systems Specialist (ATSS) for the FAA.
