Development and pre-production[edit]
On November 28, 2022, it was reported by Variety that Kevin Spacey had been cast in the film as The Voice[4] in the film, which was written by Gene Fallaize. [5]
On casting Spacey, Fallaize stated: "When I made the decision to write a role specifically for Kevin Spacey with the hope of being able to cast him in ‘Control’ it was not a decision I came to lightly. After discussions with my producers and our investors, in which I insisted that we cast him as he had never been found guilty of anything in his life, it was agreed to by all that we did not want to be part of those judging unfairly, and without the facts."[6]
Production[edit]
It was reported on June 14, 2023, that the film had completed principal photography.[7] Kevin Spacey recorded his performance separately in London in December 2022. [8]
Kevin Spacey's Acquittal[edit]
Following Kevin Spacey's acquittal on July 26, 2023, Fallaize was featured in interviews worldwide regarding his decision to cast Kevin Spacey. He told Variety "I Would Do It All Over Again"[9], and the New York Times that the filmmakers' "Gamble had paid off" [10]. He also told Sky News during a television interview that Spacey was "fantastic" to work with and "everything I wanted him to be", and said he would work with him again "in a heartbeat". [11]
Release[edit]
The film was first screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 ahead of it's general release.[12]
The theatrical trailer for the film was released on August 2, 2024.[13]
The film is due to be released theatrically in December 2023.[14]
