Cornerstone is an Austrian rock band formed in Moedling, Lower Austria in 1998.

History[edit]

Steve and Michael Wachelhofer formed a cover band together with drummer Markus Bousska. They started writing their first originals, but after many personnel changes, some moderately successful gigs and a disastrous unfinished recording session, the band teetered on the brink of collapse in the summer of 2004. After Hannah Wachter and rock shouter Anja Schirmer joined the band, they were able to move forward.[citation needed]

In 2007 the band played the "Spirit of Woodstock Festival" in Italy.[1]

In 2008 the band released their debut album Head Over Heels.

In the summer of 2009 they did a three-week US tour.[2]

In the fall of 2011, Cornerstone released Somewhere in America. They continued to do shows in Austria[citation needed], the surrounding countries[citation needed], and in the UK, where the band participated in the Rock and Bike Fest,[3] the Cambridge Rock Festival,[4] and the Pop Overthrow Festival in Liverpool[citation needed]. Rich Wilson, reviewing "Somewhere in America" for a CD included with Classic Rock Presents AOR issue 5, called the band's songs a mixture of "Bon Jovi and Roxette".[5] The band also appeared on "The Afternoon Show" on BBC Radio Lincolnshire.[6]

Later that year the band released a cover of Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy. All the proceeds of the single went to the "Room to Breathe" campaign at the Nottingham City Hospital, which was for research and treatment of cystic fibrosis.[7] The single charted at #50 for a week on the Austria Top 75.[8]

In 2015 the band toured through Europe as an opening act for Gary Howard, formerly of the Flying Pickets.[9] The band made a few changes to its lineup over the years, ending up with drummer Christoph Karas, who had played in other local bands before, and the singer/guitarist Alina Peter.

Trademark litigation[edit]

Other bands also use the name Cornerstone. This band threatened litigation against a similarly-named band on the Isle of Wight in 2013, primarily to "avoid confusion" ahead of the release of their charity single in the UK.[10]
