Craft is a cross-platform productivity and note-taking application developed by Craft Docs Ltd., a software company based in Budapest, Hungary. The application allows users to create, organize, and share documents across Apple devices, Windows, Android, and web browsers. Craft was named App Store Mac App of the Year in 2021.[1]

    History

    Founding

Craft was founded in 2019 by Bálint Orosz in Budapest, Hungary.[2] Orosz previously served as Head of Product for Mobile at Skyscanner after his startup Distinction was acquired by Skyscanner in 2014.[3] Development began with early prototyping work starting in 2018, with an emphasis on a design-first software engineering approach.[2] As of 2026, the company employs a 30-person team.[4]

    Launch and growth

The application launched publicly on November 12, 2020 for macOS and iOS.[3] Craft focused on native platform integration and offline functionality, differentiating it from web-first competitors like Notion.[5]

In April 2021, Craft raised $8 million in Series A funding led by Creandum, with participation from InReach Ventures and Gareth Williams, co-founder of Skyscanner. TechCrunch referred to the investor group as the "Skyscanner Mafia" due to the involvement of multiple former Skyscanner executives.[3]

In December 2021, Apple named Craft the Mac App of the Year at the App Store Awards.[1]

In 2022, Craft expanded to additional platforms, releasing a web version in August and a Windows application in September.[6] The company raised $12.2 million in Series B funding in September 2022 led by EBRD Venture Capital, bringing total funding to approximately $20 million. At the time, the company reported over one million installs.[6]

In November 2024, Craft released version 3, which introduced new document styling options, a Collections feature, and enhanced task management tools including a unified calendar view.[7]

In September 2025, Craft introduced a design update called "Liquid Glass" and integrated Apple Foundation Models for on-device AI.[8]

In November 2025, Craft launched an Android application in beta.[9]

    Awards

Craft has received industry awards for design. In addition to the 2021 Mac App of the Year award, Craft was named an Apple Design Awards finalist and has been featured as an App Store Editors' Choice. The application received German Design Awards for Excellent Communications Design in 2022 and Interactive UX in 2024, and has won Webby Awards.[6]

In 2024, Craft was featured in the WWDC 2024 keynote presentation, demonstrating its performance on Apple silicon.

    Features

Craft uses a block-based editing system that allows users to create documents using modular blocks for rich text, images, code blocks, and other content.[5] The application supports nested pages, folders, and linking between documents.[10]

The application provides import and export capabilities for formats including Markdown, PDF, Microsoft Word, and TextBundle.[5] Craft supports real-time collaboration, allowing multiple users to edit documents simultaneously.[10]

Version 3 added task management features that enable users to create tasks within documents with checklists, due dates, and reminders. Tasks integrate with a calendar view.[7]

In February 2023, Craft introduced an AI assistant feature powered by large language models.[4] The feature offers content generation, proofreading, translation, and summarization.[10] Craft offers both cloud-based AI processing and on-device options using models such as DeepSeek R1 and Apple Foundation Models.[8]

    Open source

Craft maintains open-source projects on GitHub under the Luki Labs organization. In January 2026, Craft released Craft Agents as an open-source project under the Apache 2.0 license, built on Anthropic's Claude Code SDK and the Model Context Protocol.[4]

    Pricing

Craft uses a freemium subscription model:[10]

    • Free – Limited to 1,500 blocks and 1 GB storage
    • Plus – Unlimited documents, AI features, and collaboration tools ($10/month or $96/year)[7]
    • Team – Shared spaces for up to 10 accounts with collaborative features ($50/month billed annually)
    • Business – Custom integrations and administrative controls

Craft offers its Plus plan free for students and educators.[10]

    Platform availability

Craft is available as native applications for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Microsoft Windows, and Android (beta), as well as through a web version.[11]

Cross-platform synchronization uses cloud-based accounts for real-time updates across devices.[5] All platforms support offline functionality, with changes syncing when connectivity is restored.[5]
