Crik Nutrition

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Crik Nutrition is a Canadian insect food company, headquatered in Stony Mountain, Manitoba. It was one of the first companies in North America to develop and commercialize insect protein powder based on crickets in early 2015.[1][2]

Products[edit]

Their products are ready-to-mix protein powders created using cricket powder (cricket flour) as the main ingredient due to its high nutrient content and sustainability versus traditional protein sources.[3] As of 2015, Crik sourced crickets from Next Millenium Farms of Ontario;[4] by the following year, the company sourced cricket flour from Entomo Farms, based near Norwood, Ontario.[5] Also as of 2016, the company's flagship product was described as a dark brown powder with a "sweet and nutty" smell, which dissolves quickly in the mouth with a taste "like almonds and honey."[6]

History[edit]

The company was founded by Alex Drysdale in 2015 after unsuccessfully searching for a company making cricket based protein powder.[7] In a 2016 article on Forbes.com Drysdale explains he was inspired after reading an article about cricket protein bars and was "sold on the idea" of using insects as food[8] because they are "a sustainable and really healthy food source that we're not taking advantage of".[9] He started first by "putting raw crickets in my smoothies every morning"[9] because he doesn't eat protein bars, but does eat protein powder daily.[8] Developing the formula took approximately 4 months of R&D.[10]

Using Indiegogo, the company raised $16,428 in 2015, exceeding the initial target of $10,000.[11] Funds were used for their first production run at scale.[10]

Crik Nutrition lists products on its website and Amazon.
