Crime in India has been recorded since the British Raj, with comprehensive statistics now compiled annually by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), under the Ministry of Home Affairs (India) (MHA). In Haryana there is State Crime Record Beaurau (SCRB) maintains record of crime data in State of Haryana.[1] Its office is in Madhuban 10 km from Karnal district of Haryana state.[2] According to the report, a total of 1,66,336 crimes were registered in Haryana in 2019, out of which 1,11,323 cases (Indian Penal Code) IPC were registered. (Indian Penal Code).[3]

Crime by location[edit]

The violent crime rate (per 1,00,000 population) was highest in Haryana (49.4), Assam (86.4), Tripura (62), West Bengal (46.1) and Arunachal Pradesh (41.7). But in terms of absolute number of cases, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest incidence of violent crimes accounting for 15.2% of total violent crimes in India (65,155 out of 4,28,134) followed by Maharashtra (10.7%), and Bihar and West Bengal each accounting for 10.4% of such cases.

Crimes against women[edit]

In Haryana state in comparison to all India, the maximum cases relate to cruelty by husband and in laws i.e. 40 per cent as compared 38 per cent in all India and 24% in Delhi. This crime rate in Haryana has decreased in 2013 compared to 2001.[4]

Rape[edit]

Crimes are on the rise rapidly in most parts of the country. According to national crime records bureau(National Crime Record Bureau), 4 rape and 3 murder cases are being reported daily in Haryana. Haryana ranks seventh in the country in terms of rapes.

Dowry[edit]

In primitive society dowry was given willingly by brides family to the young couples for starting their new life but it was turned in to demand of dowry by grooms family from brides family.

Domestic violence[edit]

Domestic violence is seen in Haryana state. In matrimonial cases in almost all the cases this allegation is levelled by bride against groom and his family members.

Organised crime[edit]

Haryana state assembly passed the Haryana Control of Organised Crime Act (HCOCA) on 6 August 2019. The Act provides unbridled powers to the state police to handle organised crime syndicates, drug cartels and the underworld.[5]

Illegal drug trade[edit]

Crime is also on the rise in the State due to the arrest of various types of nashas of the younger generation in the State. According to Rohtak police, 82 per cent of the young criminals caught in various criminal cases in the last 9 months admitted that they have entered the world of crime to meet their drug needs.

Cyber crime[edit]

The Information Technology Act 2000 was passed by the Parliament of India in May 2000, aiming to curb cyber crimes and provide a legal framework for e-commerce transactions.[6]

Petty crime[edit]

Petty crime, like pickpocketing, theft of valuables from luggage on trains and buses have been reported. Travelers who are not in groups become easy victims of pickpockets and purse snatchers. Purse snatchers work in crowded areas.
