Talenmark Cultural Center

The Cultural Centre in Kerala, India [1]is a huge monumental structure located at Kaithapoyil, 40 km away from Calicut city on the Calicut Wayanad Highway. Currently undergoing construction, it will be open to the general public upon completion on March 2020.

The structure spans 435600 Sq.Ft of space in a 6,55,000 Sq.Ft super built up area which  is situated in a 9 acre plot and financed with a 100 crore rupee investment.

The Cultural Centre forms an integral part of the Calicut Markaz Knowledge City’s 125 acre integrated township, which was initiated by the Markazu Saqafathi Sunniyya headed by the Grand Mufti of India,Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad.

Architecture[edit]

Designed by the Darvish architecture firm in Calicut, it draws inspiration from the core values of French, Persian, Ottoman and Mughal architecture. A red earth color is used for the exterior of the structure while the interior walls are engraved with calligraphic renderings of Quranic verses. The general design is that of a central circular hall supported by multiple columns which is a nod to the Ottoman domed mosque architecture style.

The basement covers an area of 5 acres and  includes a large parking space at its periphery along with a ladies prayer hall,an auditorium and a few warehouses. Additionally, the ground floor prayer hall covers a 60m X 56m space and features a Kaaba wall (the wall that represents the direction of prayer)  that exhibits calligraphic work of Quranic verses revolving around floral and vegetable patterns.

Thirteen domes and four 46m high corner minarets surround the 40m high central dome, which is the biggest of its kind in India. A total of 850 raised floating columns were used in the construction of the cultural centre. They are a key aspect of the design that helps divide the centre into four quarters which encompass the  heritage museum, the library and the academic blocks.

The interior of the spiritual enclave can accommodate up to 5,000 people at a time while the extended courtyard has an area of 6500 Sq.ft, providing a prayer space for up to 12,000 people.
