Cup of Salvation, also known as Cup of Salvation: A Powerful Journey Through King David's Psalms of Praise, is a book written by Rabbi Pesach Wolicki and published by the Center for Jewish–Christian Understanding and Cooperation (CJCUC). The book is a devotional biblical commentary on Psalms 113-118 otherwise known as the Hallel. The book is the first of its kind to put emphasis on and devoted in its entirety to the Hallel Psalms.

Background[edit]

The Hallel[edit]

Hallel consists of six Psalms (113–118), which are recited as a unit, on joyous occasions.[1] These occasions include the following: The three pilgrim festivals Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot (the "bigger" Jewish holy days, mentioned in the Torah) and Hanukkah and Rosh Chodesh (beginnings of the new month). Two years after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the Chief Rabbinate in Israel decided that Yom Ha'atzmaut should be given the status of a minor Jewish holiday on which Hallel (Psalms 113–118) be recited. The recitation of the blessing over Hallel was introduced in 1973 by Israeli Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren.

Synopsis[edit]

Cup of Salvation is a dissection made by Rabbi Pesach Wolicki of the Hallel Psalms. In it, he lays out a rabbinical interpretation of these Psalms, one by one, and delves into minute details in each of Psalms' phrasing and writing style in an attempt to bring meaning and shed new insight on the Hallel Psalms.[2]

Critical reception[edit]

Minister Mark Rutland, president of Global Servants, commended the book and wrote "Let a Rabbi from Jerusalem take you deeper into Hallel and, as never before, you will love these Psalms and the God whom they praise."[3][4]

Brad Young, professor of Biblical Literature in Judeo Christian Studies at the Graduate Department of Oral Roberts University, wrote "Rabbi Wolicki’s insightful new book follows the path of legendary Bible commentator Rashi by probing the foundational meanings and expressions of the Hebrew text. Rabbi Wolicki uses the Bible to interpret the Bible. He skillfully unpacks Torah wisdom embedded in the Psalms. His personal commentary provides fresh spiritual meaning and practical application. His work is sure to challenge each reader with a new depth of awareness for the miraculous in history and the need to express praise for covenant fidelity and for divine mercy."[3][4]
