"Cut and Run" is the second episode of the American animated television series Star Wars: The Bad Batch, based on the Bad Batch characters introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. "Cut and Run" was directed by Steward Lee and written by Gursimran Sandhu. Dee Bradley Baker reprises his Bad Batch role from The Clone Wars, starring alongside Michelle Ang, Nika Futterman, Kath Soucie and Cara Pifko.

"Cut and Run" was released on Disney+ on May 7, 2021.

Plot[edit]

The Bad Batch and Omega arrive on Saleucami to meet with clone deserter Cut Lawquane. Cut tells Hunter about the inhibitor chips, and about his plan to escape with his family now that military presence is increasing. The two discover that chain codes are needed to book public transport, but know Cut will get arrested if he tries to get one. Tech and Echo manage to steal some chain codes, and with Omega’s help deliver them to Cut and his family in time to board the transport. Hunter attempts to leave Omega with Cut, as he thinks she needs a family, but she decides to stay with the Bad Batch.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

Disney+ officially ordered a new series from Lucasfilm Animation in July 2020 titled Star Wars: The Bad Batch, a spin-off from the final season of The Clone Wars following the Bad Batch clones in the aftermath of the Clone War. The announcement described the series as Dave Filoni's vision, and he serves as executive producer alongside Lucasfilm's Athena Portillo, supervising director Brad Rau, and head writer Jennifer Corbett, with Lucasfilm's Carrie Beck and Josh Rimes as co-executive producer and producer, respectively.[1] Filoni described the series as "very much in the vein" of The Clone Wars and said it would stay true to Lucas's vision for that series of telling epic, exciting adventure stories.[2] The second episode, titled "Cut and Run," was directed by Steward Lee and written by Gursimran Sandhu.[3]

Casting[edit]

The first trailer for the series was released in December 2020, and confirmed that Dee Bradley Baker would return from The Clone Wars as the voice of all the clone troopers in the series, including the members of the Bad Batch and Rex.[4][5] Prior to the debut of the series, Michelle Ang was revealed to be voicing a defective clone known as Omega.[6] Additionally, Stephen Stanton and Andrew Kishino reprised their roles as Admiral Tarkin and Saw Gerrera, respectively.[5][7]

Music[edit]

Kevin Kiner was confirmed to be scoring the series in January 2021, after previously scoring The Clone Wars and Rebels.[8] He wrote the Bad Batch Theme for the final season of The Clone Wars.[9]

Release[edit]

"Cut and Run" released on Disney+ on May 7, 2021.[10]

Critical response[edit]

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 88% approval rating with an average score of 7.75/10 based on 8 reviews.[11]

Jesse Schedeen of IGN stated the episode "allows our heroes to regroup and take stock of a galaxy transforming before their eyes" and the series to "revisit a familiar face from The Clone Wars days."[12] Megan Crouse of Den of Geek stated that "The Bad Batch often seems to be working for me on the strength of what it isn’t doing." and that "It doesn’t feel complete, either, not unless I’m extending a hand half-way out of fondness for Cut’s family."[13]
