Biography[edit]
Donald "D.J." Williams grew up in Richmond, VA. [3] He is now based in Denver, Co.
Dubai Arrest[edit]
On April 17, 2017, while on a trip to visit his sister, Williams was arrested at Abu Dhabi International Airport[4] for a cannabis vaporizer cartridge found in his luggage, that he was unaware was left in his bag. Williams was held in custody for 6 months. He was eventually deported from Abu Dubai and returned to Richmond, VA to his parents home to recover. [5] A GoFundMe was set up while DJ was held in custody and raised over $25,000 to help cover his expenses and legal fees. [6]
In an interview with High Times Magazine Williams detailed the inhumane conditions of his detainment. These included food covered in flies, brown water, toilets that were little more than holes with feces covered hoses, another inmate dying in his cell, 110 degree temperatures causing inmates to pass out, and being accidentally placed with solitary confinement in a pitch black room with rats and roaches.[7]
One night one the way to the bathroom Williams was attacked by two inmates and using the metal leg off a chair as a weapon. They struck him in the head and called him Donald Trump repeatedly. The two were trying to be initiated into an anti-American group within the prison. His head wound was stitched up without anesthesia.
Finally, Williams had a court date that neither his family or lawyers were notified about, and he was sentenced two 2 years and a $10,000 fine for drug trafficking. After 37 days and eventually getting help from the US Embassy diminished to possession with just a fine and deportation.
